This young stag was taken with a .35 Whelen AI using the 225gr Sierra Gameking projectile. The shot was an ideal scenario for the Whelen with the animals vitals partially obscured by dense undergrowth. The deer was ready to bolt and it was a case of now or never. At the shot, the deer jumped forwards and collapsed. No tracking required. The impact velocity was just over 2200fps.
The first photo shows the exit wound.
Below, the skin has been flayed back to exose more of the exit wound.
The blow photo is slightly out of focus photo but still shows evidence of emphatic wounding.
Another shot, using the same rifle and load at roughly the same impact velocity. In this instance, the bullet raked forwards (animal quartering away) and caused a huge amount of damage (see massive exit wound at front). The rear legs were quickly removed to prevent meat spoilage.
