Daniel SchindlerOver the years Ive used ordinary hunting knives to gut & clean my game, from Pheasants to Deer, Black Bear and Elk. Nothing special about the handles & blades, they all worked OK. Sometimes happy...sometimes not.For daily use at home in the kitchen & dining room, wife & I are huge fans of Cutco knives. Sharp 24/7/365 & durable both understatements. 5-Star customer service should you ever need it. Doubtful. Not too long ago, I bought this knife, orange handle. https://www.cutco.com/p/drop-point-knife Henceforth and forever more, it will be THE knife that resides in my back-pack or on my belt 24/7 regardless of hunt. Razor sharp is an under-statement. Cutco will sharpen it for you free. Consider a hard, serious look at this knife. And NO, Im not in any way connected to Cutco. IMHO, this is a knife that will serve you well for the rest of your life, regardless of what you ask of it. Its already exceeded my typically unreasonable expectations. We all know, really, really good tools are hard to come by. This is one. You can thank me later. God Bless & Happy Holidays. |

Ed SybertRe: Knife - just my personal opinion...Daniel:I've had great but limited experience with Cutco. I plan to buy more of their knives for different purposes. Did you choose the plain edge or the "Double D" edge. Plain, I'll bet. Thanks, Ed |

Olivier ROUVIERERe: Knife - just my personal opinion...Another good option used by most hunting guides here in Europe is the Moravnik's Companion S. For just 14, it's probably one of the best skinning knives around. Scandi grind sharpening is the key.For wood or bone chopping , the giant Terava Skrama 240mm is my choice and hard to bit. |

Andrew MurrayRe: Knife - just my personal opinion...I spent a small amount of money on an "Elk Ridge" knife, Elk Ridge is a brand under the Master Cutlery umbrealla which is generally not well-regarded. The knife was something like $30AUD, quite cheap. similar to this one https://www.apexhunting.com.au/p/hunter-knife-elk-ridge/ER-ER085The steel is very hard and had a fairly utility edge on it from factory. I assume it was designed to be not very sharp but maintain some kind of "usable" edge for a long time. I spent a good while putting a proper edge on it and it's never let me down. Stays sharp, has taken apart multiple animals without needing more time on the stones. |
