P-14 found in the bottom drawer

As the headline says, the bottom drawer or my writing desk. Don't know how it got there, don't know who gave it to me. Looks as if someone had started modifying (sporterizing?) it. Has some issues, none too serious that alarm me. Some parts missing, but nothing I can't make, or find.

Trying to find a good calibre now. Did a search on the forums for "P-14" and came across some good posts with some good suggestions. The one that really caught my eye was the .308 Norma. However, in one of the posts (sorry, my memory is failing, I can't remember who said what), it was mentioned that the bolt face did not need altering for the Norma. Mine will, not a big deal. If the face proves to be too difficult, I'll just turn the rim down on the cases.

Barrel will more than likely be a Benchmark, 1-10" twist, 28" heavy bull (not quite straight taper), then it can do double duty at the bench and in the field.

Had a look at the trigger mechanism. Looks like a military to me. Found a couple places that could use some modification to lighten the 12# pull and the 1/2" creep and the 1/4" overtravel (not really, but it seems that way).

Seems to me I read somewhere here (memory fail yet again) that this type of Mauser-like action doesn't have the pillar on the front screw. The rear one is there, but I'm not sure if the front one is missing or if it ever had one. Anyone know?

Re: P-14 found in the bottom drawer
I received a return phone call regarding Timney triggers in Canada. Ordered one, they said it could be within the week, or, it could sit at the border for three weeks. But, at least they would bring one in for me. He also said if you were still having difficulties, he could bring one in for you, as well. I'm not sure what it's worth at your end, but by the time mine gets to me its about $70CAD.

Re: P-14 found in the bottom drawer
I took the plunge today. It was a beautiful spring day, sun was shining, no bugs yet. I heat treated my bolt, at least I hope I did. While the process itself is fairly simple, prep work and post treatment prove to be the hardest part. It took the better part of the day to get to a point where I could say I was finished. I think the intermediate and final polishing was the most tedious of all. And like Nathan had said, it is not for the faint of heart. One good thing, it is only steel. It can be re-done over if need be. I'm happy with the way it turned out but the real test is when one of you fellows first pull the trigger on that max test load. I would do it, but someone has to run the video camera.

Well done on the lug lapping Paul.

Yes, this might be one time when a lead sled, some cable ties and a long piece of string come in handy.

Damn you two do nice work. That looks really good. Thomas is lucky he had you and not me to do it.

I was thinking I would take the sandbags I use to surround my ball mill out to the range and completely cover the action. And still stand way back.

Quick update - will hand off the barrel blank and the action to the gunsmith at the end of this month. Turns out, he has the table right next to mine at the annual gun show. How convenient is that?

Thomas - hurry up and shoot that thing, will you? I need to hear how it goes.

i know Paul im feeling guilty as, everyone worked hard to get it done for me then i haven't shot it yet, sorry team i let you all down ha ha.
i seemed to have lost the farm i was shooting on and not to keen to go through the hassle of a barrel break in on a public range.

Re: P-14 found in the bottom drawer
Tell you what. As a special favour, you send me the rifle, I'll test fire and load up 100 rounds to your specs. Then I'll hunt with it for two or three years, just to make sure it doesn't change zero, then I'll ship it back. Oh, it may need cleaning by then.

Yeah, losing a range like that sucks the big one. We used to shoot here, but then we got neighbours and everyone started freaking out, until they needed something (like a bear taken care of. Then it was a totally different attitude.)

I received my Timney trigger in the mail today. Was going to put it on tonight, but it's just been too long of a day. Probably give it a go in the morning with a clear head and fresh coffee.

Re: P-14 found in the bottom drawer
I have to thank Thomas for the hot lead to the Timney trigger. What a nice piece of machinery. Simple as pie to install, easy to adjust, and so, so smooth. Timney recommends to not adjust the pull weight to under two pounds, so I put it at 2lbs 1oz. With no creep and factory polished sears it lets off like silk on silk.

It was interesting trying to get it into the stock, though. Maybe mine is a bit different from Thomas', but my inletting doesn't look anything like the pic that Nathan posted. Timney says some minor inletting may be required, I'm pretty sure mine equates to substantial.

Next step is the barrel and chamber at the end of the month, then bedding and a scope mount. Slow going.

Re: P-14 found in the bottom drawer
Paul my friend you are a true gentlemen with such a gracious offer, and to think i could have it back in as little as 3 years with an almost burnt out barrel ha ha.

i finally got few shots through my rifle yesterday a massive 4 shots at about 25 metres but at least its a start in the barrel break in process.

i was just shooting factory ammo and i have a light vx1 3-9 on it at the moment. the recoil was pretty good a lot better then i thought it would be in fact.
wasn't taking much time when aiming as it was getting dark just making sure i was holding it right got shot 3 and 4 touching so its good start.
ill finish barrel break in with factory ammo then go to my hand loads and do some testing.

my one still got the p14 trigger not the p17 as it hasn't turned up yet but still shootable. i trialed fit my timney with boyd stock and the stock needed plenty of inletting.

did you manage to sort out your reamer paul?
did you ask about case capacity of the 308 norma mag at some stage?

Re: P-14 found in the bottom drawer
Good to hear, Thomas. Nice to know that it feels good at the shoulder. Nearing dark, were you getting blinded by the muzzle flash? One of the perks of hunting/shooting at dusk. I need to take the 45-70 out late one night just to see.

Yeah, the jury is still out on the Boyds stock. While it is way better than what I had before, which was nothing, I am still kind of disappointed with it. There is nothing horribly wrong with it, but after hearing and seeing all the hype, I guess I thought they would be better. The wood is an average piece of walnut, which is a good thing. The factory finish is some sort of plasticized plastical plastic. I'm sure it's meant to protect the wood from weather, but I think it would protect it from just about anything on this planet, except me of course. The inletting for the bottom metal was horrible. The metal didn't even come close to fitting inside the hole. The inletting for the action was at least good and tight, too bad it didn't follow the centre line of the stock.

I talked to the 'smith about my reamer, and he didn't see any problems. He has a throater so we can put it wherever we want. I did check the volume on the case and wrote it down somewhere in the Hornady book. One would think that it would be in the Norma mag section, but apparently, I didn't think that was a good place for it. When I come across it, I will let you know.

And if you want, we could fast track your rifle and get it back to you in just under the three year mark. But only if you want to. No point in rushing things.

Re: P-14 found in the bottom drawer
DO NOT USE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION FOR RELOADING PURPOSES. ALWAYS USE A RELOADING MANUAL AND START 10% BELOW MAXIMUM.

Thomas - found it. For whatever reason, it was in my .243 notes. The VOLUME capacity of the resized case (.300WinMag run into a .308 Norma Mag FL sizing die) was 75.5gr of IMR 4831. This took the powder to just barely above the shoulder/body junction. I haven't used this load to shoot, just to measure the capacity of the case. According to the Hornady book, this is about 10grs. over maximum. I think you might feel this one.

DO NOT USE ANY INFORMATION FOUND HERE FOR RELOADING PURPOSES. ALWAYS USE A RELOADING MANUAL, NOT SOMETHING SOME DOORKNOB ON THE NET WROTE.

Re: P-14 found in the bottom drawer
hi Paul
have a 26" barrel on mine meant the flash wasn't to bad.
so your are still do the 300 h&h magnum and setting the throat with a separate throat reamer?
i wasn't sure if you had capacity of the norma to compare to the 300 h&h but looks like you got it sorted.
my hand loads with the 208gr amax start at 64gr of adi 2213sc/h4831 then goes up from there. depending on when i get pressure sign im hoping for around 2800fps maybe more depending on how the old girl handles it
