Mike DavisRe: med length cartridge/modified x57so in effect you are making a ???/ 7.62x57mm ?????trying to go between .308 and .30/06 in velocity etc are you realistically going to improove on the .308????? more than other more simple methods??? like a K hornet surely someone already does this to .308 winchester. I believe there are quite a few guys now doing the .284 something or other that is in that length action but faster than 7mm/08 already. |

Mike DavisRe: med length cartridge/modified x57But I do like way you thinking and it sure looks good, maybe a 7x57 would just save lot of hassle and its a pretty well proven round as it is without any mucking around. |

Thomas KitchenRe: med length cartridge/modified x57sorry mike should of explained a bit better.idea is to do a second chamber cutting over an original 08 variant. maybe as away to get little more out of a barrel that the throats is showing signs of wear or to get bit more velocity. like you say some people will get there 7mm-08 tikka reamed out to 284 win with a similar idea. if you were getting a brand new barrel it would be simply easier to go different route. i think the 7x57 would have more taper but don't have any to compare. it also depends on how long a reamer is pass the the set cartridge and if its got parallel sides once its pass the rim length or if it tapers. |

Nathan FosterRe: med length cartridge/modified x57Hi Thomas, You could run a 7x57 reamer in (or 7x57 AI), then run a .30-06 reamer in to cut the neck, then run a PTG uni-troater to cut the leade. That would give you a .30x57.Velocities would be halfway between the 7x57 and 8x57. I am not sure if its worth the muck around though because the Tikka can utilize the .30-06 cartridge without fuss. If you had a 30x57 AI for the sake of running the heavy 208gr ELD seated long, I would expect perhaps 2500fps? It could go faster but it always pays to exercise caution otherwise it can lead to disappointment. |
