Hey Trevor. I use engine oil on a rag. I have found that CRC 6.66 or WD40 seem to have more oil content than the other lighter oils. I have mixed diesel and engine oil for leaf springs and other things that needed a heavy film of oil for protection or lubricant. Nathan has said in his books. Use Grease on the area's that are inside the stock. Regular checking and cleaning of your hunting tools and equipment are your best defense against corrosion and keeping your safe in a warm dry atmosphere. The books are full of all the information you need to do with rifle care.

It really depends on what I need it for. If it's for short term (between range sessions, daily applications through hunting season), I use the CRC SPC-350 (thank you, Nathan). If it's for long term storage, I use a lanolin based spray grease (http://www.fluid-film.com/.

FluidFilm has a mil-spec that was designed for waterproofing underwater welds on ships. It is not quite as thick as cosmoline, but a little heavier than vaseline. It doesn't migrate once it sets up (about ten seconds), and it doesn't have an offensive odour.

Re: what oil you guys using
I just tried to give you what I use and how I personally treat my rifles these days. Products I never heard of have been appearing regularly in recent years, and some of the stuff Nathan uses, I cannot locate here.

I used to do much as Warwick mentions and it worked just fine, especially that lithium grease. Last year I began to use SLIP2000 EWL for general lubrication of the bore and their 30 weight if it is going into the gun safe for a couple weeks or so while we are away. Longer term I use their synthetic grease for the bore. This approach has made cleaning very easy as carbon and powder fouling is surprisingly minimized.

For the action and barrel etc., I rub in their synthetic grease. For the epoxied bedding I do the same ...all a very thin layer rubbed in really well.

For cleaning, I remove the bore grease using brake cleaner and tight wet patches until it is clean, then dry it thoroughly and use Autosol as described in Nathan's books then clean that out and use a loose patch to apply Wipe Out Accelerant followed by a loose patch of Wipe Out/Patch Out, leave for 15 minutes then a dry tight patch or three followed by repeats on Wipeout until the patch comes out clean as can be. It does not take long. I then run a wet patch of Wipe Out through the bore and leave it overnight. The following day I run a tight dry patch through and look it over. Normally if there is copper I will just stop there if the accuracy since last firing is still just fine. If not I repeat the overnight thing for a couple nights until there is no sign of copper. I then just run a couple swabs of Slip2000 EWL and leave it be for a few hours followed by a loose patch (dry) to take excess out.

If I had to remove copper because accuracy had dropped off I then go to the range and do around 4 or 5 five shot groups watching for groups sizes and when it is shooting tiny bug hole groups again, I leave it along until ready for a hunt...or if wet/high humidity, just pass a light patch of Slip2000 through and store it..

I hope this extra helps someone out.
