Craig HenardHi,Thinking about getting one of these for some longer range deer hunting.I can get the Sendero fluted,Sender unfluted,Remington 5R or the Police model for about the same price. Is the fluted as good as the unfluted in the Sendero ? Is the 5r a stainless barrel ?what about the P? I am wanting the most bang for the buck . I am torn between the 7mm Remington magnum or the 300 Winchester magnum and maybe even 30-06. I will be shooting Whitetail deer with weights from 100 pounds to a real big buck may go 250-300 pounds. Ranges from point blank out to maybe 1000 Yards, Nathan given the conditions and game I will be hunting and the ranges which Remington would you most likely start with and which caliber ? Thanks Regards Craig |

Nathan FosterRe: Questions about Remington 5r,Sendero,PHi Craig, I think for the wide range of body weights you might encounter, an R5 in .300 Win Mag would be the most suitable for you. An optimum all around load would be the 208gr A-Max driven at 2850fps or faster. |

Craig HenardRe: Questions about Remington 5r,Sendero,PThanks Nathan.I see that this rifle can be had in either a 24 or a 26 inch barrel. I am assuming the 26 would be better ? And also noticed that some come with threads on the end of the barrel and some dont. Any thoughts about one versus the other ? Thanks and regards Craig |

Nathan FosterRe: Questions about Remington 5r,Sendero,PHere is the best I can ascertain. The 24" barreled rifle is from the M24 production line. It is a .308Win barrel, 1:11 twist, but instead reamed to .300 WM. These were the first run and should no longer be available new, only second hand. The dedicated .300 Win Mag 5R rifle features a 26" 1:10 twist barrel and is most likely the better bet if utilizing the 208gr A-Max (thou some 1:11 twist rifles can shoot very heavy bullets quite well). If the barrel is threaded, you may wish to employ a suppressor if this is legal in your state or a muzzle brake. Only you can decide on whether it best suits you to adopt a threaded or non threaded barrel. The book you purchased will answer more questions regarding pros and cons. |
