AndrewHi All,I had a Remington 700 SPS in 300 Win mag on order but just found out that it was not in the container that arrived in the country. Now I am thinking of going a different way and buying a second hand rifle for a donor action and putting on a trueflite barrel as I have a new stock and timney trigger that I was going to use anyway. The question is how much work is involved in changing from .270 for example to 300 Win mag. I realise the bolt face will need to opened up. Can anyone give me some rough figures to work off for cost of the work on the action and a new barrel? Thanks, Andrew |

mark whiteleyRe: Remington 700 ActionIMO I would buy a magnum action to do a 300wm and have thought about this process quite a bit, my reason is that the 300wm is usually made on a long action and is not long enough if you want to seat bullets out long unless you have a really short throat, which would be ok if you want to shoot lite projectiles only but if you are getting a 300wm a 180gr projectile is IMO the weight you should be looking at minimum. so maybe getting a second hand rifle and re barreling to 300wm is meant to be so you can decide the throat length as well as if you get your own reamer the projectile type.I bought a 375 H&H to do exactly what you are thinking about but I buggered up and shot it first, it shot very well to good to rebarrel so I dropped the idea and have re barreled my long action 300wm into a 270wsm so that I have the room to use VLD's. I have been getting the hebejebee's and not sleeping that good without a 300wm in the safe though, its a classic good luck with your build regards mark |
