Rem 700 mag not feeding

Hi
I have just done my first batch of loading for my 6.5-284 ready for testing, now just hoping the snow and wind stay away for this weekend. When checking that my coal was ok for the rifle I created a dummy round and tried to load it. Although it fitted perfectly in the chamber I noticed that if pushed down in to the magazine (hinged floor plate style) it sat too low to feed with the bolt. There was plenty of length in the magazine and I tried it sitting hard forwards as well as hard to the back. If I didn't push it down in to the mag fully it wouldn't stay held in place and would pop back up in to the chamber.
As this is the first time I have used the rifle since buying it I'm not sure if this has always been the case with it or not. Can anyone suggest why this might be happening and any possible solutions?
I guess I could convert it to a removable mag and given that it is a long action this shouldn't cause any issues for coal. But I would rather just sort the current mag if possible. For now I have a single shot rifle, just hope it proves accurate enough not to need a second shot.
Thanks
Dale

Re: Rem 700 mag not feeding
I might be talking to myself but I think I have solved my problem. After posting my question I had another look at it and tried loading two rounds (one dummy and one empty case as I don't like the idea of playing with live ammo in my living room) in to the magazine. The top round sitting to the left fed ok but the second was still sitting low. Checked the spring but no issue. Then I noticed the slot in the back of the magazine box was not even from top to bottom. Removed the stock and reassembled and all seems to be ok now with the two rounds.
Hopefully problem solved and bring on the range day.

Re: Rem 700 mag not feeding
Hi Dale.
im guessing this isn't factory 6.5-284 rifle instead a long action rebarreled?

what i think the issue is, is that the 284 i wider then the cartridge the action was designed for.
i think because of the extra width the feed lips of the magazine won't let the round pop up enough for the bolt to pick up the round.
i think you can open up the feed lips a little and the round should then sit higher.

PLEASE DO NOT modify your feed lips until someone with more experience confirms this or knows what the issue is, i have no experience with the 284 rounds

Re: Rem 700 mag not feeding
Thanks Thomas. You are right it has been rebarreled by a previous owner. I am assuming the original action was in the .270 or 30-06 size. Now with the magazine box repositioned it seems to be feeding ok but the real test will be once I get it on the range.

Re: Rem 700 mag not feeding
Hi Dale I have a Remington 700 in 243 and had trouble with it not feeding the bolt would feed the 1st round but would either slip along the top of the 2nd round or push it forward about 1/4 of an inch then slip over it I opened the lips a little bit and it made it worse so I closed it back up after spending a lot of time watching what was happening I worked out that I needed to close it up more towards the barrel end of the mag this was due to as the bullet moves forward the tip of the bullet rises and allows the shell to pivot on the lips I only had to close it up about 30 thou or so further forward and the problem was solved the other thing I find with mine is when I take the stock off to give it a proper clean I have to be careful to make sure the mag sleeve is sitting properly hope this is of some help

Re: Rem 700 mag not feeding
This is a bit like going from Rem or Win Mag to Rum (fat case rebated). Very slight changes to the mag box design make all the difference. Hope you have managed to get it sorted.

Re: Rem 700 mag not feeding
Yes seems to be feeding ok now. I think I just hadn't put it back together properly after media blasting the barrel (just hate shiny stainless on a hunting rifle).
The only problem now is this cold wet weather has put pay to my plans of going to the range to do my load development.
Oh well I guess we have had a good winter so far so can't complain.
Thanks

Re: Rem 700 mag not feeding
So got on the range today and all is good in the world! Magazine is feeding fine and best of all the groups were respectable.
This is the first loads I have put through this rifle. 140gr Nosler Accubonds, lapua brass, fed 210m primers and 2213sc. Used the Nosler load data and did 5x 3 shot groups one grain apart in powder weight.

1st group 1" at 100m,
2nd group just under 1.5" strung left to right,
3rd group 0.5" clover shape,
4th group two through the same hole and third 1" right (shot felt good so don't think it was pulled at all)
5th group 0.5" string with two touching and a small gap to the third.

Given that this is a hunting rifle so I'm not chasing absolute perfection (the rifle is probably capable of it but I'm not these days) I think I will run with load number five. This was highest powder weight so should be giving best velocity, around 2770 if Nosler are to be believed.
Now to load up some rounds and get it out on the hill to fill the freezer.
Cheers
Dale
