Bullet coatings

Following a visit to a gunsmith, who showed me that he Molly coats his bullets, I've been reading up on the proceedure. It would appear that the new material of choice is Hexagonal Boron Nitride, doesn't have some of the moisture, acid negatives of Molly, has a higher out-gass temperature and doesn't require waxing. Also has no real health drawbacks. Using these lubricants does reduce velocity by 20 to 80ft/sec.

However is there any real benefit in going to this trouble. I was considering it as a means of limiting copper build up, and of helping keep groups together. The claims are, the effects of cold barrels and fliers are lessened.

Has anyone had experience with coatings. I don't mind going the extra work if its worthwhile.

Re: Bullet coatings
It can be worth it, especially if heavy copper fouling is a problem.

Norma tests show both an increase in throat life which generally increases barrel life.

The loss of 20-80fps is simply due to a drop in pressures as you will have read during research. This velocity can easily be reacquired by increasing powder charges.

It is definitely true that by coating all bullets, the fouling shot will be closer or within the standard group. One of my rifles printed its fouler 1.5" off center a few days ago. Thats a long way off target, I have never seen a fouler go this far.

One of the hardest aspects of bullet coating, is trying to ensure that the coating stays put during bullet seating. I like to flare case mouths if coating bullets. I have to admit, I don't do a lot of coating these days, but its worth experimenting with if you have the time, more so with the Boron Nitride you mentioned.

Re: Bullet coatings
thanks Nathan. Sounds like its worth a go. I've got two platforms to try it on, a 243 and a 7mm rem mag. I'm still working up loads for the 7mm so will try Boron on my more established 243.

BTW, I got two copies of your book in paper and gave one to a mate. A lot of info in there to digest. I wish I'd read it before buying my rifles but on the upside, I've now got a couple of projects to complete. Looking forward to your next books.

Re: Bullet coatings
At this stage I haven't been able to find a source in Australia for the Boron Nitride. There are plenty on a commercial scale but none willing to deal a small quantity. There are guys selling small amounts on Ebay but they wont ship to Aust.

If I find it I'll try it, at this stage its a matter of keeping an eye open.

Hi Warrick, I've been looking at the HBN too and found this if you haven't already.

30 bucks for 1 oz OR

Bulk from China, 45 to 50 bucks for a Kg

Be interested in any findings you may have/get.

BTW also read you can mix this stuff in alcohol and use it to treat the bore, I believe it is marketed as a ceramic bore coat. Has been touted to dramatically reduce fouling.
