James ComboI just purchased a new Weatherby vanguard series 2 in a .270 caliber to hunt mule deer and elk in the wide open mountains of Idaho. Most of the shots would be anywhere from 50-400 yards in open terrain. In an older remington .270 I had used 150gr soft point core loct and never lost an animal although rarely did they ever anchor at the location they were shot. Most would run 50-100 yards even though they were struck broadside with good placement. It makes locating them somewhat difficult although I have never lost one yet. What would you suggest for a better bullet? I was looking at the Federal Premium 140 gr accubond but it looks like they have recently discontinued them. Any suggestions? |

Nathan FosterRe: Recommended .270 bullet for elkHi James, I highly recommend hand loading the .270 if it is to be put to use on large bodied deer. The differences between factory and hand loads can be quite profound. The .270 really comes into its own when utilizing 150 grain bullets driven at velocities of 2900-2950fps. This cannot normally be found in factory ammo. Your Vanguard, if it has a good bore, will most likely have a sweet spot at about 2920fps.The 140gr Accubond is not really at the top of my list for heavily muscled game. Instead, I would far rather see you try either the 150gr Nosler Partition at around 2920fps or the 160 grain Partition loaded to 2800-2820fps. I have made some much needed amendments to this section of the .270 text in the knowledge base after reflecting on the last several years and conversing with readers, drawing on hindsight and shared experience. Have a read, I think you will find just what you are looking for. |

James ComboRe: Recommended .270 bullet for elkThank you so very much for your input as it is truly very valued. If I don't reload though what factory ammunition would you recommend? |

Nathan FosterRe: Recommended .270 bullet for elkHi James, Federal load the 150gr Partition if you can get a hold of it. |
