Tikka T3 magazine modification

I friend if mines 16 year old boy has just bought himself a T3 in 7mm08. I will be putting together some hand loads for him, thinking the 162gn Amax would be a good option -they've worked well for me in this caliber- he wants to shoot out to 300 yds- He'll be taking anything from goats to deer with it and is heading to Fiordland with his dad this coming roar. I found the magazine to be a short by around 4-5mm. Wondering if anyone has had experience modding the mag? I'm thinking to dismantle it and pull out what looks like a plastic block/filler at the rear and replace it with a bit of teflon chopping board or the like. Possibly need to make changes to the bolt stop too... Nathan I do have all of your books already. I know you mentioned this issue with the Tikkas especially with the magnums. I also recall reading about freebore/bullet jump inherent in the 308 design... can't seem to find where exactly I read that just now for details on acceptable jump.
Mag measures 71.8mm, COAL measures 75.2mm when at the lands (162 Amax). I'm thinking it would be preferable to get closer than 4mm off... Any suggestions, tricks or traps to watch for would be much appreciated.

Re: Tikka T3 magazine modification
Hi Glenn, please do not alter this mag. If you really want to change it, use a .270 Win Mag. It is the front of the magazine that is of concern, causing trouble after removing the rear block. I did put photos of this in the accurizing book. In any case, the jump is acceptable in this bore, accuracy is generally fine.

Note that we have just finished editing a 1 hour 20 minute tutorial on this rifle. If you can hold off touching it- and by this I mean zero rounds (not even one), I will have this ready ASAP and it ensures the end user is able to go from zero to hero in one session.

This will however be a pay to view / rental. We have to pay for hosting with a vid this size.

Glen a Tikka 5 shot mag from a L/A as Nathan has said with the bolt stop mod you mention. Or the stop can be easily replaced with an original from the L/A if preferred and the young bloke gains 2 rounds in reserve.

Nathan I remember discussing the video Idea with you a fair while ago and l'm glad you have got it going. Sometimes a visual instruction is so much easier to follow, this will make an excellent partner to the accurising book etc.
Great stuff!

Re: Tikka T3 magazine modification
Hi Glenn,
The bolt stop is not available from Tikka as a single part only as a bolt stop kit (You gat all three action length bolt stops and retaining pins) In NZ these run about $160. You only need to shorten your existing stop so save your money. Mags are around $160.
Great news on the Video Nathan! CAn we pre register for your new Vimeo channel yet please?
Cheers, Dan.

Re: Tikka T3 magazine modification
Thanks for the replies, great to get some clear and reliable direction on this. Keen to check out the video. I have already loaded 20 x 139 interlocks these have already been sent down the tube to paper for sight in, barrel break in and fire forming cases, following instruction (accurizing book in hand) Hopefully this is not a real negative save for a little extra barrel wear? cheers
