Craig HenardHi Nathan, I recently bought a Mauser 1891 7.65x53 with a sporterized Fagen stock.Rifle has 24 inch military barrel/I am going to mount a scope (somehow LOL)maybe a scout type of setup. Of the factory ammo choices I have here are the 180 grain loadings by Prvi,Federal etc and the 150 grain Hornady loadings of either a 150 grain soft point or the 150 Grain sst. The 180 grainers are around 2500 fps and the hornadys are listed at 2785 fps. What would you pick for deer from 20 yards to say 200 yards with the deer weighing 150 average to 250 for a huge one. Thanks Regards Craig |

Nathan FosterRe: 7.65x53 factory ammo for deer ?Hi Craig, the 150gr .312" SST would be the most dramatic bullet and would cover most of your hunting- but because there is a chance of heavier deer and your description of ranges also hints at the possibility of angled shots in woods conditions, I think that maybe a 180gr bullet is the safest bet.Start with the 180gr Prvi load. This will also allow you to use open sights for now (will match military ammo more closely). You will note (when you get your ammo) that the projectiles have a very large amount of exposed lead up front. These bullets expand quickly and perform reliably with a good measure of penetration. Further notes can be found in the KB, in the .303 Brit and 7.62x54 texts in both the factory ammo and hand loading sections. This bullet may not give instant poleaxe due to its low muzzle velocity but you will find it to be very reliable and clean killing with uniform results across a wide range of body weights. To me, this is much better than having the extremes of a string of spectacular results on light framed animals followed by unexpected disappointing results on that day when a big buck finally showed and a snap shot was taken, producing a clean but slow kill, time lost tracking etc. Hope that helps. |

Craig HenardRe: 7.65x53 factory ammo for deer ?Hi Nathan, thanks for the information.I have used the Prvi load in the 8mm Mauser and killed deer with it. The Prvi Load in that case proved very accurate and penetrated like gangbusters, while decent expansion. I will pick up a couple of boxes of it as well as the 150 grain SST loads and see if I can be lucky enough to have them shoot to similiar poi ,then maybe I could use the Prvi in the woods and the SST load if I am hunting the fields mainly. Per usual, thanks again for the interest and advice. Regards Craig |
