Barry ThorburnHi nathanim building a 358 win on a howa action for a bush gun, do you think i would lose much going a 20inch barrel over 22inch? i was thinking bout keeping the same profile as the howa factory barrel till it gets to .700 then carrying that thru to the muzzle what do you think? do you have any info on 35 cal bullets, was going to stick with the 225grn partition for large game and maybe 200grn hornady ftx for small deer. cheers baz |

Nathan FosterRe: 358 winchester barrel lengthHi Barry, sorry for the late reply. .700 at the muzzle is correct, this is how my .385's, 9.3 and .375's have been contoured. If you tell your smith that you would like .700 at the muzzle, plus a parallel knox as found on the Howa, he can sort the rest. There is certainly not much in the way of a velocity advantage with 22" versus 20". You will be using powders along the lines of H4895 burn rate, same as the .308. That said, the 22" barrel can keep noise just a bit further forwards. I have found a marked difference in perceived noise when docking from 22" to 19", it was a surprise to me. At 19" (.308 Win), if I had to take a shot without ear plugs, I found it very uncomfortable. Oddly, 20" took the edge off it and 22" more so. I have no means of measuring this so it could well be that my experience was subjective and not objective. Your bullet choices sound very good. There just aren't enough people enjoying the .358's these days. It is a real shame, such a great caliber. The .358's are immensely effective. Your project sounds great. Your smith will most likely check the locking lugs but to be sure, please state "lap bolt locking lugs" (or blue print action if tooling allows) into the job order. If the trigger has not had a birthday, get that done too. |

Barry ThorburnRe: 358 winchester barrel lengthThanks for the info Nathan, think il go a 21inch barrel since i cant decide. my howa has the new two stage trigger that they are coming out with now ive got it down to 2.5 pounds and will see how that goes otherwise il get a timney. ive read alot about good performance from the 358 win i look forward to trying it for myself, just waiting for the long line at the gunsmith to get to me. Cheers Baz |
