Sebastian ShandIm wanting to knock up some fireforming loads for my 280ai,I have 280 Winchester nickel plated factory ammo that I have pulled the bullets and dumped the powder as the coating on the nosler projectiles was ruining accuracy I've got 162 amax lying around I'll use. Should I just do a powder charge at book minimum? And is it best to seat projectiles into the lands when fireforming? I also have a stash of Winchester standard brass in 270 I was going to play around with forming to 280ackly As well. Can this just be necked up to 7mm and fired? I mucked around with nickel 30.06 cases aswell thru afew different dies and got mixed results, putting them thru 280ai full length Lee die resulted in a doughnut forming at the base of the neck. Best results seemed to come from full length 7x57 hornady die |

Mike DavisRe: Fireforming 280 ackley brassusual story with trailboss/starting place for loads is to measure VOLUME of a normal load (lee spoons awesome for this) measure out that VOLUME of trail boss and drop by 20%that gives you a case that is filled to 80% of what it would be with normal load. hope that helps double check with adi/hogdgon site |

Adrian RegnaultRe: Fireforming 280 ackley brassI use a medium load of ADI 2208 for fire forming my cases (Norma .280 brass/ 150 gr Norma SP) and it works fine. Have used Trail Boss on .270 cases (as per the std instructions) but wasn't totally happy with the end result, so re ran with 2208. I probably wouldn't bother with the .270 cases again, but they were free. I don't expect great accuracy when fire forming, so I would have probably just shot the factor ammo of as is. Hope this helps. Adrian |
