Mark WhitakerI like my 7mm-08 in the new Remington 700 SS Mountain rifle a nice compact lightweight hunting rifle. But its not powerful enough for the new Hornady 180gr ELD-M.So I really like the 7mm for the game I currently shoot. So my thought is get the Remington 700 Long Range with the M40 stock and rebarrel it in 280 AI #5 contour 0.70" lenght 22 inches long, 1:8.5 twist. This should give 2650fps with the new Hornady 180gr. My calculations give 1000 yard velocity of 1640fps and 1800fps distance of 825 yards. Any thoughts? Mark |

Mark WhitakerRe: I've had another thought -a very dangerous thingI knew thinking was a dangerous thing. The easier option for me is rebarrel my 300 win mag SS SPS in 7mm rem mag reduced load with the same barrel configuration, put a Precision Platforms stock on it, and I would have a better rifle for probably less money. Ed SybertRe: I've had another thought -a very dangerous thingWhen moving up in case capacity it is generally a good idea to move up in barrel length. The 280AI would justify at least a 24" barrel and the Magnums work well with at least 26" barrels. Barrel length alone adds only a few ounces to the rifle weight, and most long-range hunting is not done in tight cover where the longer overall rifle length would be awkward. JMHO, Ed |

Bryan WebsterRe: I've had another thought -a very dangerous thingI do not regret rebarelling my 7mm Rem Mag with a 25 inch Benchmark sporter contour barrel.Have not yet tried those 180 grain ELD-M bullets but the 175 grain ELD-X bullets move out fast enough at around 2950. |

Anon GibbsRe: I've had another thought -a very dangerous thingTake that 7mil 08 and ream to 7 mm 300wsm open up bolt face, fit sako extractor and a shortend long action wyatt box, bolt stop lengthend and open up feed port backward(not sure how big your knox is?) probably going to need a recoil aid and yes, possibly will be steering towards stupid weight/ power ratio but be a handy lil pocket rocket for alpine type?Just another dangerous thought. |

Warwick MarflittRe: I've had another thought -a very dangerous thingMark you need a 7mm in a 30-06 case....... which is kind of a 280I guess a 7-06 Ackley so you can't jam one in a 270 ... The dangerous result of this kinda thinking. ..... |

Mark WhitakerRe: I've had another thought -a very dangerous thingThanks for the suggestions.I'm not after max velocity, only 2650 to 2700 fps with the 180gr and I love the 7mm-08 as it is for the 162gr. I like the ability to harvest game from 50 yards to 900. If I go for max velocity it will restrict the distance at a minimum of 200 yards. Mark |

Sebastian ShandRe: I've had another thought -a very dangerous thingGidday markI shoot a 280ackley which is a re barreled Winchester m70 pre 64. True flite 26inch 1-9 twist, I currently shoot 160grain sierra tipped matchking at 2930fps using Winchester nickel cases adi 2213sc powder. I just got a box of 180grain eld m to have a play with so it will be interesting to see what velocity I get with them. Chris Murphy has lengthened mag box to 89mm and if I seat the 180s 1mm off the lands it still feeds smoothly. |

Mark WhitakerRe: I've had another thought -a very dangerous thingSebastian, any update on the 180 eldm?Dangerous thought #3. I also have a Remington 700 VSSF in 223. Heavy 26" barrel in the good HS Precision stock which I don't use. Now my thought would be to turn this into a 7mm SAUM? All I would need is a bolt and barrel. Possible? Mark |

Sebastian ShandRe: I've had another thought -a very dangerous thingSorry mark I'm abit slow on the load development front atm, juggling 70hours at work and spending time with the family is leaving me abit short on time. With a bit of luck I'll load them up tomorrow night and hopefully do some testing next weekend after the pistol shoot. |
