7x57 Hornady 120 Vmax loads?

I have a Mod 700 Classic, 22" bbl, and I want to use this 120 Vmax for coyotes and rock plinking. Anyone have a good load ( obviously just a guideline for me) with this combo? Is IMR 3031 and such a good place to start? I don't care about the hides, I just shoot'em take a picture and sling'em in the ditch! They can be mangy and have plague carrying fleas out here...ugh. Thanks

Hi James, this burn rate is a touch on the fast side, certainly doable though. I would prefer 4064 for full power development. The reloading manuals have to play it extra safe with the 7x57, not just for the old actions but also the huge variations in brass capacity. I am equally cautious. Best to work up from scratch for this, starting with mid point book loads, use a chrony, study your brass and let your rifle and brass do the talking.

Speaking of brass, you may want to use a separate lot of brass for this load as the pill will be seated well out into the long 7x57 neck and will form a donut in the brass / neck if you use these loads over and over. The danger of this is that it creates a pinch point in the chamber area of the neck, jacking up pressures if you later switch back to a longer bullet. This can be a good time to put that old Prvi brass to use. By seating a caliber into neck, you will have plenty of case capacity (regardless of how heavy this brand of brass is) and with your strong action, will be able to work loads up to above 3000fps.

Thanks for the "heads-up" on the doughnut Uncle nate! :) I will indeed get me some Privi brass for this bullet weight. I have new Norma and RWS brass for my longer bullet game loads. I knew 3031 was fast, just wanted to use up my small supply of it for this rounds purpose. thanks again!
