Warwick MarflittSo I was in my cave last night checking over 35 Whelen loading dies and sized a few cases and made a dummy roundAs I was using the press I thought it would be great to have a mechanics Torque wrench set up for the handle You will be able to set it at the foot pounds (ft-lbs) or (Newton meters) required for bullet crimping and it will be exactly the same every time it clicks at that setting. What do you think? Why because I have strong Scottish genes and I tend to over tighten things ....... |

Bob MavinRe: ft-lb torque wrench as reloading press handleHi WarwickIf you adjust your dies correctly (full stroke) They'll be consistent? |

Warwick MarflittRe: ft-lb torque wrench as reloading press handleYes I can see how that should work. Everyone in their reloading manuals seam to say use the same amount of force on the lever and if you want to make everything the same for consistency then why not use a calibrated handle. It's got to be better than guessing.? [b] |

Warwick MarflittRe: ft-lb torque wrench as reloading press handleYou don't guess you're cars tire pressures 😆 |

Thomas KitchenRe: ft-lb torque wrench as reloading press handlehi Warwick.they already make one and i have often wonder if it would help with ES. https://www.titanreloading.com/consistent-crimp |

Martin TaylorRe: ft-lb torque wrench as reloading press handleInteresting one Warwick, l don't crimp at all so these are just thoughts out loud!Once set l think Bob's Idea is sound as long as brass length is consistent. The Warren & Brown type bar is a fare Idea remembering the mechanical advantage of the press linkages will mess with things. I wonder if the same Idea could apply to collect neck sizing. |

Warwick MarflittRe: ft-lb torque wrench as reloading press handleThanks guys. It would be good for neck sizing to the same setting too. With a bit of testing measuring the force of the press shaft with a 25lb weight on the handle you can then work out the required setting on the torque wrenches handle to suit. The factory's must have to set the hydraulic pressures on their tooling to get uniform results. I know that many will read this and think why bother. I just want to do the best I can with what I have got . As I already have a torque wrench to use it's not a big deal to fit it up and try....... |

Paul LevermanRe: ft-lb torque wrench as reloading press handleWarwick - a man after me own heart! Another gimmick to make. Take a socket that fits the end of your press handle, preferably a deep socket to get a good grip, weld a 3/8" or 1/2" open end wrench to it, and put your torque wrench drive in the open end of the wrench. Just make sure to calculate the extra length into your torque value. Looks like hell, bigger than granny's panties, but works well. |

Paul LevermanRe: ft-lb torque wrench as reloading press handleFurther to Bob's comment: Lee collet dies are adjusted " until it contacts the shell holder plus one more turn" . For the crimp dies " to touch the shell holder plus 1/2 turn more". Adjusting to full stroke is not recommended on over-centre toggle type presses. |
