Weatherby Vanguard bores

Happy Holidays, everyone.
In The Practical Guide to Long Range Hunting Rifles it was mentioned that in 2011 and 2012 the factory barrels on Weatherby Vanguards and Howas had hit a rough patch, so to speak. Can anyone speak to the quality of the Vanguards currently coming off the shelves?

Hi Joshua, they seem to be going well now, more hits than misses. I am still seeing the occasional dud Howa / WBY but nothing like before.

It can be good if you can inspect the muzzle end of the bore prior to buying.

All other factors are the same, lugs, trigger, bedding, mag box- all need addressing for optimum results. Certainly a nice action to work with whether it is branded as the Howa, Weatherby or Nosler. It is the traditional Sako action, the Sako that could have been but never was.

Thanks, Nathan. I was given gift cards for a tidy sum to Bass Pro Shop for a Christmas gift. The items that have caught my eye so far are the Vanguard in 7mm-08, a Ruger .357 revolver, a Remington 783, or a nice rangefinder. I think I'm officially in the paralysis by analysis phase.

Regarding your future / possible mountain hunts, a bino / range finder would be useful, 10x42. Pricey but worth saving for.

Failing that, it would be good to see that 06 of yours up and running with heavy pills / suitable powder / LR optics.

Last time I was in Bass Pro, I came out with a basket load of pills. Used Riley as my Mule through customs as she had the lightest luggage.

That's Father of the Year material, if you ask me. In like vein, I saw a pair of blemished Leica Geovid ranging binos - 8x42, I think - the other day marked down under $1,000. I briefly started calculating how much I could sell off some of the kids' toys and games for... I'm not proud of it, but I won't deny it either.

I feel like the 06 is rounding into form. I had some groups this year on paper that I was very proud of and all my shots in the field went exactly where I intended. I've got a good stash of Amax bullets and will be picking up some TMKs soon. I've addressed my need for a precise scale and expect to see my velocity spreads shrink. I believe it's time to test both my loads' and my optics' (not to mention my own) capabilities out far.
