Andrew MurrayHello all!I mentioned some old SuperX ammo in my other post. I thought I would post it and see if anyone recognises it and can comment on accuracy but more importantly terminal performance. I am thinking they could be useful as a closer range cartridge than the Z Max/A Max. I daresay at their age they are well and truly age annealed. They look like some kind of HP that has been filled. ![]() ![]() |

Bob MavinRe: Projectile HelpHi Andrew. Are they factory rounds? They look like Woodleigh P?P projectiles? |

Andrew MurrayRe: Projectile HelpHi Bob,Yes old Winchester factory ammo. SuperX stuff. Not much more info than that sadly. |

Kenneth KephartRe: Projectile HelpThey look like bullets intended for lever action rifles. They did the flat nose, or round nose to keep the round in front of it from going off under recoil in a tubular magazine. Hence why you don't see tube magazine rifles loading a pointed tip. |

Andrew MurrayRe: Projectile HelpHi Kenneth,I saw a lever 308 once. Very loud! The tips would be roughly the same size as the primer. A bit smaller actually. I do see what you mean though. It is a very flat tip. |

Brendon GreigRe: Projectile HelpYou said it was old ammo it hasn't had the tips filled off my grandfather used to do it with ex military 303 bullets |

Andrew MurrayRe: Projectile HelpHi Brendon,It looks far too clean for that, that's a good suggestion though. The box had clearly been opened a few times. I suppose if someone did a real neat job on it it would be possible but I think that is unlikely given just how neat it is. |

Andrew MurrayRe: Projectile HelpQuote: They look like Woodleigh P?P projectiles?
Hi Bob, I missed this first time round, very keen eye, what the photos don't show is the cannelure on the projectiles, it is just visible on some of them, the Woodleigh PP projectiles lack this. Cheers though mate. |

Paul LevermanRe: Projectile HelpI checked some of my older manuals from Olin Industries, Arms and Ammunition Division, and the closest they showed were the Open Point Expanding bullets. But these have a definite opening/hollow point. They were almost identical to what you show. It could be that later versions filled the point with lead. These older manuals were very vague and not forthcoming with real useful information, but that was when times were more simple as well, and they were either target or game bullets. Can you post or send me a photo of the cartridge case, it would help.email: [email protected] |

Nathan FosterRe: Projectile HelpHi Andrew, I would be interested to see the cannelure. It looks very much like Olin Australia purchased a quantity of Norma 180 grain Vulkan projectiles. If it is the Vulkan, I suggest you save some and try them on game. If you sight your Z-Max load 3" high @ 100 yards, these should shoot about dead on. Use them for hunting pigs in close. As the Vulkans age, they do become somewhat brittle / frangible, but are still a very hard hitting projectile. A kinetic bullet puller would answer this one way or another. |

Andrew MurrayRe: Projectile HelpHello all,Thanks for the replies, Paul and Nathan I will get you those photos next week. My guns and ammo are not stored at my home and I won't be able to access them until next week. Safe storage laws in Australia make it difficult to keep firearms at a rental property. Not impossible just hard. Thanks very much for all your help! |

Andrew MurrayRe: Projectile HelpHello again,Many thnks for your patience, I have been able to retrieve the bullets and have pulled one apart for your expert advice. Powder detail: ![]() Primer detail: ![]() ![]() Projectile details ![]() ![]() ![]() Box Details: ![]() Inside the box has "NRAA 308", the NRAA is short for National Rifle Association of Australia. These projectiles were likely loaded in Australia from imported components. I spoke with Olin here not long ago and they said that they used imported USA brass for all their cartridges. It has a batch code too which reads A2DFE32. Cheers team. I have the full original photos if anyone wants a full high-res image. |

Paul LevermanRe: Projectile HelpSorry, Andrew. Will have to defer to the locals on this one. You get good brass in any case, might as well have fun shooting it off. |

Andrew MurrayRe: Projectile HelpI got in touch with Woodleigh,They advised they are indeed their 130gr Protected Point. The cannelure is added at Winchester Australia's request. |

Bob MavinRe: Projectile HelpHi AndrewI was given a few hundred of those 130's ( no cannelure ) to test, before they were released, they work very well inside 300yds. I was told Federal wanted a heap to load for the National Parks & Wildlife culls. Cheers Bob |
![]() @ 12:07 pm (GMT) |
Andrew MurrayRe: Projectile HelpCheers Bob,I only have 9 left sadly. I'll keep them as a dual load. Sitting in the top of the mag for close range and will just feed my Z Max loads into the chamber for longer work. |

Bob MavinRe: Projectile HelpHi Andrew,. That's not a Wallaroo either either I would delete that video before the powers that be see it, Check it out,,, as I don't think your allowed to shoot them. Looks like a Swamp Wallaby to me?Cheers Bob [b] |

Andrew MurrayRe: Projectile HelpWell spotted Bob,The current cull does allow for Swamp Wallabies on a case by case basis. Also red necked wallabies. The property was full of both. The title is incorrect but the video is also not publicly listed. Just for private viewing essentially. |

Andrew MurrayRe: Projectile HelpI should note that this link will be de activated soon too.I would post it publicly but the risk of videos like this being hijacked by uninformed comments is too great. I don't really want to share beyond people who may benefit from it. |
