T Ea MccI am a bit confused by this rifle. Had thought it would make a fine rig. Nice piece of wood. Good stout barrel. Decent weight. But checking the other specifications, the barrel is a1 in 12. Am I missing something? Does longmaster refer to the length of the barrel instead of the intent for longer range? But if not longer range , why put a 24 tube on a 308? But then, if yes, a long range rifle, how do you put a 12 twist on it ? I have to assume people who specify and design these things for a living know what they are doing. Which means I assume I am missing something regarding that 12 twist. Anyway, I marked it off my list. Love the mini round bottom model 70 action, but not sure I want to risk stabilizing 175 TMK in a 12 tube at more than a few hundred yards. |

Anders ÖsterbergRe: Kimber Longmaster ClassicI don't think you gonna have any problems...Isn't it so...? That the bullet get more stable due to redused speed over range , but keeps the most of it's rotation-speed... http://www.bergerbullets.com/twist-rate-calculator/ |

Nathan FosterRe: Kimber Longmaster ClassicHi there, you need to trust your gut on this, not the brochures or fancy websites or gun rag reviews. Trust your gut.The twist is OK, it will stabilize the pills out as far as they will expand to. But yes, more thought could have been put into this and no, the gun makers do not always really know what they are doing. This is just a minor issue compared to other factors here. |

My belief is that twist is part art and part science. But the scientists will tell you it is all science. I always considered velocity in the barrel and twist to be more closely related. Since the faster the bullet, at any fixed twist, then the faster it rotates upon leaving the barrel. And the 308, being slow for todays 30s, would need a ten twist more than the bigger / fast 30s for that reason. Yet, the big 30s all get 10 and the little 308 usually an 11 or 12 (I guess because the makers assume everybody with a 308 is shooting 168 grain and all the 300 RUM boys are shooting 200s. |
