Mark WhitakerNathan, I have been toying with the idea of modifying my 700 Mountain SS to accept an Alpha Industries type 2 308 Magazine so I can get longer COL 162gr A-Max 7mm-08 rounds feeding, but I have no need of a 10 shot mag and I like the smooth underbelly of the stock with the standard hinged floor plate.I have been looking at the internal magazine and it seems to me that the rear of the receiver can be machined for an extra 3mm, modifying the bolt stop mechanism for the extra 3mm as well. The internal magazine shroud can be modified to suit and possibly cutting out at the forward part so it sits flush with the receiver at the feed ramp gaining an extra 1mm without any modification to the feed ramp. This should give an extra 4mm? Is this idea practicable and give reliable service disregarding cost at this stage. Mark |

Nathan FosterRe: Internal Remington SA Magazine ModificationHi Mark, the easiest way to gain magazine length, is to fit a Wyatt magazine box. The action will need milling to suit, at the areas you have described. The bottom metal also needs reshaping to accept the 4th round. Before you begin such an undertaking, you should try to determine if it is necessary. A well made 7mm-08 rifle will shoot exceptionally well, regardless of bullet jump. Another option is to start with a T3 that was previously chambered for one of the 06 cartridges, rebarreled to 7mm-08. This can allow you to seat out long. |
