Howa 1500/Nosler M48 bolt stop/mag box modification

R Hodragon

I picked up a Nosler M48 Patriot in 30 Nosler for a good price (Client ordered it then backed out)

Played with a few different bullets, im currently shooting itty bitty clover leafs @ 100yards with the 208 ELD-M’s at just under 3000fps

But OAL has basiclly turned it into a single shot

I can carefully put one in the mag under the bolt for a quick follow up shot... but i dont like the way it sits cock-eyed in the mag

Looking for detailed guidance on the bolt stop, mag box mods

Thank you for your time Nathan

Not familiar with the nosler but the Howa can be milled out at the front and a new box made

I own a Howa short action (308) and know that after market floor plates and detachable mags are available which can increase mag length. No experience with the M48 but if it is similar design perhaps these could fit. Sorry these answers are speculative at best.

I myself do not have a need for a detachable mag as my loads are well within the magazine limits, convenience and capacity is not a massive issue. My fingers are and thin enough to feed under the pic rail and scope comfortably.

Its been fairly well documented now that the M48 is indeed a Howa action, but with a bit of blindlg to set it apart from the Howa itself and the Vangaurd. I have zero issues with it, it shoots great.

Just need to get the mag issue fixed up

Ok so just a simple mill forward in either alter or remake mag box and machine shop/engineer will be able to do this. Just need to mill forward a few mill that you need and fold up or cut and weld new box

Have you tried the simplest method....?

Shortening the OAL to maglength and work up the precision from that.. ?

ELD's are forgiving , so you would probably find a accurate load with more jump .

Hi R, the action can be milled to the rear, leaving about 80 thou remaining material forward of the trigger unit (depending on which trigger unit).

The box then has to be altered at the rear. The internal length comes out at around 3.8 which is just great.

These OAL issues will continue to surface with all of the magnums. I am working with David Manson at present to redesign some of our common LR cartridges so that they can handle the new projectiles (which are still getting longer) without sacrificing velocity. There is quite a disparity now between the actions and the OAL's. But in this case, if you can, it will be very useful to lengthen the box.

Hope that helps. Please don't be harsh on our other forum members, they are just trying to help.

Somewhere there's photos of a howa extension that previous owner of trueflite done I think
might be on the forum somewhere but I don't have time to search for it.
