Magnus HanssonIn the market for a blaser R8, standard length is 58cm (23) ..what do I loose chosing 52cm (20,5) in terms terminal performance??Shorter barrel seems realy nice to live with!! Im using SST 150gr, 95% within 150yds! Thanks Magnus |

Mike DavisRe: Barrel length 3082 and a bit inches....5 cm thats what you loose(the Mrs might protest but deer shouldnt)your target is now 5cm further away velocity wise if you stick with same load you may loose between 25-50 fps per inch so maybe worst case 100fps real world answer...... unsuppressed it will be louder...you can always dock some off but cant put it back on......if you reload you should be able to regain the lost velocity...unless you are a dedicated bush hobbit why would you bother docking inches anyway???? within 150 yards you say....well velocity diference shouldnt make that much of a diference...heck Im happy to use much slower load within that range, infact will use my 7.62x39mm but will place shots as carefully as I can. |

IainRe: Barrel length 308Short rifles are indeed easy to live with. Have you actually handled the R8 ? Blasers are shorter than conventional rifles by design and are very compact and nicely balanced with the std barrel length.Balance with the shorter barrel may be fine, or you may not like it. A lot of Euro hunting is done from high seats and, particularly if they have a roof, the short barrel can be very good. I believe this may be the main reason for that option being available. Velocity loss with 150s in 308 in your scenario is likely to be at the bottom end of Mikes' suggestion - maybe as little as 40 to 50fps. I have used Federal 308 150gn factory ammo in both 19.5 and 20.5 barrels and velocity was 2750 in both. This will vary from barrel to barrel. |

Warwick MarflittRe: Barrel length 308Everything Mike said. Out to 150 y yards knowing what I know now. I'd be looking for a good solid second hand 308. With a long barrel. Shoot it before you buy it. If the end of the barrels rough no worries! Cut it back to the good rifling 21-20 19 1/2 inches . Re-crown zero and use it for freezer fulling duties 1 inch groups at 150yds with partitions 150 or 180gn. Find them and you won't go hungry. If you know what to look for in a rifle using Nathans book information as a guide there's no reason not to get a good shooter for your requirements. Good hunting. |

Magnus HanssonRe: Barrel length 308Great answers guys!!The mrs says hello and agrees about loosing 5cm is a bad thing 😂😂 To the gun, we do a LOT of boar hunting in small hides using supressors, so the Guns tends to become long n in the way ..100% darkness is a guarantee! Balance wise 52cm with supressor should work! |

Warwick MarflittRe: Barrel length 308Do you really need a suppressor ? |

IainRe: Barrel length 308Here's another option.https://www.blaser.de/en/products/bolt-action-rifle-r8/r8-models-with-wooden-stock/r8-silence/ Not cheap, but an excellent way to get a suppressor on an R8. Also notice the barrel length with the factory suppressed R8. 42cm or 47cm If you prefer to get a suppressor fitted to a standard R8 you could easily chop the barrel shorter than 52cm and still get satisfactory performance. RWS are now making a 308 load especially for short barrels, but I have no idea of the performance. |

Mike RRe: Barrel length 308I believe the Hornady Tap 168gr (A max)are made to suit a 20Inch barrel I get about half MOA with them and they seem very effective on pigs which I was very impressed with, I got some nice sized ones and I couldnt have wished for better performance. |
