Joshua MayfieldHas anyone fiddled with the Nosler 220 gr. Ballistic Tip in supersonic loads? I'm curious if these bullets, loaded mild in a .30-06, would have any merit on deer and hogs at close range. |

Jorge GonzalezRe: Phantom Fiddler QuestionHi Joshua, you mean subsonic? Ive been thinking the same but with a 338 federal, very heavy and very soft bullets, very slowly. Maybe even supressedAnyone tried ir? |

Joshua MayfieldRe: Phantom Fiddler QuestionHi Jorge,What I've found to read on these bullets, in terms of people who've actually loaded them, has fallen to two extremes: people who load them subsonic on the 300 Blackout as they're marketed, or people who've tried them from a 30-06 or 300 Winmag at full velocities. I'm not too intrigued by either of those options but I wondered what shooting them somewhere between 1400 to 1800 fps at targets within 100 yards would do. This point of curiosity may be solid proof that it's time for me to go fishing. |

Paul LevermanRe: Phantom Fiddler QuestionHi Joshua. Never having used this bullet, and after reading your query, I went looking. From what I see on the Nosler site, it appears to me to be a heavy controlled expansion bullet. 86% weight retention at an impact velocity of 1800fps and 12" of penetration. At 1400fps, it would probably shed very little if any weight, but the penetration would still be there. That has to do damage, but would probably be a relatively narrow wound channel. Hard to say what it would do (probably pin-hole, albeit, a very large pin) if you started it at 1400fps and didn't meet any resistance.Personally, I wouldn't try it for fishing. It's too hard to judge the refraction angle of water at 100 yards. |

Paul LevermanRe: Phantom Fiddler QuestionI just went back to the Nosler site to see what else was there. What I saw was not impressive, almost downright misleading. Every description for their BT bullets was the same, word for word. Not usually a noticeable item until you read the same description for the 300gr. 458 cal BT. It has no boat-tail. Also noticed that the pictures they use for expansion examples are identical, no matter what calibre or bullet weight. Really? Come on Nosler, surely your marketing team gets paid good money, and you'd think that they could come up with something a little different for each bullet. Their bullets may be good, but their methods suck, and convinced me that they can't be sincere in their marketing. |

Warwick MarflittRe: Phantom Fiddler QuestionHey Joshua. I have some 225 and 250gn cast lead bullets to try in my 35 Whelen AI. Cheaper and I think more suitable for low speed hunting. Hares. Rabbits. Crazy eh! Who would have thought that rabbit shooting with a Whelen was doable..... I got mine off a bloke in Tokoroa on Trade me..... |
