Simon CrowtherHas anybody figured out a good safe way to carry a rifle on a motorcycle? A rifle is such an awkward object on a motorcycle and let's face it, a motorcyclist with a rifle slung over his shoulder would be like a red rag to a bull to a policeman.Lots of advantages to going hunting with a motorcycle though, there are a lot of spots that I can ride nearly all the way to and I can get a bike across the Cook Strait at a fraction of the cost of a car. I just wondered if anyone had any good ideas or experience? |

Tony PotterRe: Motorcycling with a rifle?Hi Simon.Given the current state of political bull shit in NZ regarding firearms and upcoming changes it's probably best not to use this mode of transportation on public roads unless rifles are not visible. Even if carried in a zippered padded case the profile of said case would probably be enough to make every cop look twice. Also if crossing the strait you couldn't leave it with the bike so you'd have to carry it with you on board. Itid probably attracted you more greef than its worth and ruin a good hunting trip.I write this after watching cop trying to pull over man with no legs for speeding on a mobility scooter on the News.WTF |

John D. Hays - New MexicoRe: Motorcycling with a rifle?Well they make snowmobile scabbards that are hard shell and these can be adapted to motorcycle as always just stay away from the hot muffler. You can also find a takedown rifle of some sort that can be stored in a more broadly rectangular hardshell. That would be something that doesnt scream firearm. Whatever youve got would have to be hard shell locked and for semi-permanently mounted on your machine. Out here people used to have a gun racks in the back window of their pick up trucks but you dont see that anymore even though its not illegal. Its a good way to get your truck broken into and lose your gun It just seems to me like it was all too much of a magnet for trouble of some kind or another and who needs the aggravation ? I suppose you might put your bike on the trailer and take it to the trail head or entrance to the back country and strap your rifle scabbard onto that. I dont think anybody here would have exception to someone on back country roads but I wouldnt like to see them on a street vehicle. |

Simon CrowtherRe: Motorcycling with a rifle?Of course! Silly me, a take-down rifle, one of those Thompson Center single shots would do it and fit into a motorcycle pannier.Perhaps I'd better not have a dead tahr sitting on the pillion either:-) |

Mike DavisRe: Motorcycling with a rifle?I do believe you are looking at this all backwards....you are a licences firearms user. you are ALLOWED to ride your motorcycle from point A to point B. rifle slung over your back in a soft cover is just that. I used to sling mine across the front....as for red rag to a bull for coppers??? yeah nah.why should it???? its not like a concealed carry now is it??? sawn off shotgun sticking out from under a great coat maybe....but surely we arent that far down the rabbit hole that you need to be worried about it in a case while riding a motorbike??? and if and when you do get a large animal you ring the good wife to come and collect it in the car LOL. |

Simon CrowtherRe: Motorcycling with a rifle?I was joking about having an animal on the pillion. I do though much prefer traveling on a motorcycle than driving a car but for any distance it isn't nice to carry a rifle slung over my shoulder even in a case, it'll flab around in the wind and is generally unwieldy. Also unfortunately, although legal I do feel it's better not to advertise the fact that I have a rifle. These days when I'm out in the bush, I get some really funny looks from people, mostly tourists, the current gun paranoia is getting ridiculous unfortunately, I prefer to be discreet, anything for a quite life. I'm also very keen to get over to the South Island a lot more, it's very expensive taking a car across the straight but perhaps it'd be easier to move back there. I still reckon the ideas of a take down rifle could be useful. |

John D. Hays - New MexicoRe: Motorcycling with a rifle?Simon, Im curious, couldnt you just leave a rifle with a friend or at a shop for repair on the South Island during season? BTW, transporting guns in violin cases is an American tradition, particularly around Valentines Day. |

Simon CrowtherRe: Motorcycling with a rifle?Well, it's not just about getting to the South Island. There are some huts I go to where I walk in with my dehydrated gruel to eat and people turn up on quad bikes with sausages, steak, tins of beer etc. This really winds me up as I hate dehydrated food, there are places where I'd like to spend longer and would if I could get supplies in.The trouble with quad bikes apart from the cost is that you can't ride them on the road, you need somewhere to store it and a trailer to take it to the road end: I can't be bothered. I'd much rather ride a motorcycle from home, something that I can use for a variety of things. Besides, I just like motorcycles, I have done since I was a small child and at sixty years old I still do, I don't think I'm going to change now. In fact when I was living in Brazil, I thought about becoming a policeman as you get a free gun and a motorcycle, it seemed like a top job to me; unfortunately my Portuguese wasn't good enough. |

Frank VallichRe: Motorcycling with a rifle?Guitar case works. Any time of the year! Once you're of the main drag a across the bars. I'm still discreet. Move rifles to 4Runner without any evidence. Load the quads. When neighbors ask I state looking for mud holes. Today we entered into a remote area west of Whitecourt. Oil lease road blocked to auto traffic. Scoot around the concrete barriers. Rifles now strapped to front carrier under a quilted moving blanket. Bear scat in the 20 k area of trails. Visual, two white tails, moose, elk tracks . Locate prime spots for the 14 x 16 foot tent. Returning with ramps to beat the germs and drive in with 4runner, tent, supplies, etc. Yes, always discrete and helpful to locals. |
