Nathan FosterRe: Is the 303 Lee action quicker, lighter, more accurate and practically stronger than the Mauser.Hi Warwick, I read the article but refrained from posting. The guy stated that his MLE was accurate (showing a target), failed to state that his MLE was a sporter and much different to the full wood jobbies which warped and shot all about during the Boer campaign. Also, I doubt few people really understand what constitutes fast handling away from a rifle range where everything is nicely laid out. I agree that the Lee was fast and I used to pride myself as a young buck for racking up kills faster than guys using semis. But I have also had to use the Mauser in defense and when your asshole is puckering, its surprising just how fast any action can be worked. The bigger issue for me is when the Mauser runs dry if you try to dump feed loose ammo and jam the action because of the extractor. But one can also jam a lee by loading the mag wrong. (edit / additional: It was easy enough to load the mag correctly - push down, slide back. Rim jams came about when dumping stripper clips). The Mauser had 5 shots, the Lee had 10, but in the field, Lee ammo was carried in 5 round clips in 50 round bandoliers so quite often, the mag stayed put and instead (as we did when culling), ammo was stripper clip fed like the Mauser. Both actions can be accurized, but the Mauser is easier to work on. Two screws into the action is easier to work on than one. Its bullshit to talk about armorers setting up a Lee for accuracy (shimming etc) when we had the likes of Savage spitting them out with little care. Further to this, a change of around 5 grains bullet weight or a small change in charge or bullet shape is enough to cause around 7 MOA verticle dispersion in the rear locking Lee. Simply no room for deviations in ammo production versus the fixed sights. Yes the Lee action was strong enough. But if you don't jig the No.4 action during rebarreling, the action will twist like butter well before the barrel comes away. So make of that what you will. But ultimately, I think that unless you have faced another man who wants to kill you, all talk about this is faster / better / stronger is all moot. Either you lose your shit or you don't. I try my best to provide solid research, yet still I find my own pages lacking in depth and breadth. It plagues me knowing that I could take each article much further, that I could have done much better in hindsight. I wonder how these shit-out-an-article-per-week bloggers will see themselves in years to come. Will they be proud of their legacies. |
