Quincy KoehnHi,I have a Remington 700 SPS in .223. It had terrible accuracy until I might a Hogue stock and glass bedded it and free floated the barrel. The ammo I have been using is PMC 55grain soft points. At 100 yards they would print about a 2 group before I put the new stock on. I dont have any solid data on shot farther than that although i think it was around a 10 group at 200 yards. After I put the new stock on and bedded it, the groups have tightened significantly although not enough for coyote hunting which is what its for.Ill see if I can post a picture of my most recent data using 3 different types of ammo that are not the PMC. Anyway, I found that with no matter what kind of ammo( including , Hornady 53 grain Vmax, 55 grain Vmax, and Federal Premium with Nosler Ballistic Tip 55grain), my groups are about 1.23 average. Then they open up to like 3.5 average at 200 yards and either stay the same or tighten up at 300. So why does it have tight groups at 100, get bigger at 200 and then close down at 300. Im not exactly new to shooting, Ive pulled a trigger at least 25,000 times with various firearms and air guns. So Im not sure what the deal is. |

Scott StruifRe: .223 Remington model 700 shooting weirdHi Quincy. I cant get pics to post on here from my phone, but theres instructions on doing it on a windows computer that works fine. As to your main question, maybe shoot a group with the most accurate ammo at 100 with your scope at 3x. Then shoot the group at 200 on 6x, and the 300 yard group at 9X. Your sight picture would be the same. Then, if you see the same anomaly at 200, contact Bryan Litz at Applied Ballistics. He was looking for documentation of the phenomenon, and maybe still is. Mike DavisRe: .223 Remington model 700 shooting weirdat 100 yards, target looks big...its only just down there...we shoot at hundy often so get a bit blasé about it.....200 target is smaller and we have to work at it a bit harder...300 its a long way for a lot of us so the concentration is even more so. for me PERSONALLY the .223 is great wee rifle,300 yards is alooong way to expect a 55 grn projectile to do business on anything bigger than a rabbit or hare. Ive shot light skinned, very light boned wallabies at 300 yards but wouldnt take on anything heavier boned past 200yards with the wee rifle. wind starts to push something that light around no end once it slows down....my best guess is its a combination of all the above.... |
