Nosler 150gr E-Tips .270

Hi Nathan,

I'm looking to go to a heavier bullet than what I'm currently using (140gr HPBT) and I see you rate the e-tips and the sst. I'm probably going to choose the e-tips essentially because I don't want to do the annealing process. Now I'm currently only getting 2840fps from the 140gr I'm using so I don't think I'm going to get the suggested 2900fps out of the etips that you say is recommended. How much of a factor will this be in your opinion? I shoot game from 40yds to over 300yds (not long range).

Thanks Nathan,
Grant

Hi Grant, you don't have to anneal the SST. The annealing process simply enhances performance further.

I have mentioned the merits of Homogenous copper bullets but possibly have not conveyed weaknesses with equal vigor. Much of this was covered in my second book, regardless of its long range focus. It is important to drive these bullets fast and the proof of this can be found in the Barnes line of bullets where you will find that there is a tendency for Barnes to produce light bullets rather than offering new heavy options. The lighter a homogenous bullet, the faster it can be driven (providing its BC does not immediately handicap it). The reduced SD can be used to aid energy transfer, the light bullet weight also meeting greater target resistance where velocity is high. Sorry, this is a very rough, over generalization that is explained in more detail in the book.

I would ask that you try the 150 grain Nosler Partition for one full hunting season. This will give you the penetration you are looking for while retaining violent wounding out to ranges exceeding 300 yards. This is a bullet that never fails to please and can be used to establish a base line of cartridge performance. Just try it for one season and observe performance.

We may need to get together on the phone to explore why you are down 200fps with the 140gr bullet. Something not right there, perhaps we could find a fix.

OK, back to my xmas break...

Thanks Nathan and apologies for interrupting your break, I forget these things when i'm on a mission. I'm not sure why i'm done on velocity but i wont annoy you with the rifle specs and load etc.

I hope you had an enjoyable xmas day and you enjoy the rest of your break.

Cheers,
Grant

p.s I was meant to say 150gr partitions but for some reason I had e-tips in my head.

I think we should have a look at why velocities are down, after the new year if you feel up to giving me a call during NZ work hours.
