Speer Deep Curl

I have been trying to settle on a load for my 6.5x55 and 7mm-08 during my load development I had great results with the Speer Deep Curl bullets which delivered .75 MOA with the 7mm and an impressive .25 MOA with the Swede running max loads with both (H380 and RL22 respectively)
The terminal ballistics database is lacking in information on the Deep Curl bullets can anyone give me an educated opinion on them? Being a bonded bullet I know they will retain a healthy amount of weight but the wounding width and rate of expansion is in question.
I will be mostly hunting whitetail and feral hogs in the 100-300lbs range. Any suggestions?

Re: Speer Deep Curl
Hi Jared, as I understand it, the Deep Curl bullet is the same bullet as loaded by Federal and called the Fusion bullet. I have tested this bullet and you will be able to find comments in the KB under the 7mm-08 factory ammo section.

Further to the KB, below 2400fps, wounding begins to taper off, same as most core bonded designs. A more dramatic drop in performance occurs at 2200fps and below, again the same as other core bonded designs. The stouter the animal the better, pigs being an ideal quarry. The weight loss mentioned was when using the Fusion on heavily raking shots and where heavy bone was encountered during raking shots. For ordinary cross body and quartering shots, penetration was fine. I spent some time using this bullet at bush ranges on pigs where it was an acceptable performer but as ranges were extended, performance waned. I think what disappointed me most was that in lieu of the lack of energy transfer (delayed killing), I expected exceptionally deep penetration but this did not occur. I would have been willing to sacrifice a bit of one for the other, but to achieve neither in any dramatic fashion was a let down. Nevertheless, these were high expectations. Under ordinary conditions and used at close to moderate ranges (which is quite typical of White Tail hunting for many folk), the bullet worked fine.

The Speer gold dot utilizes the same electroplating methods. I found that I had to alter the .357 and .44 cal bullets to enhance stopping power. These bullets gave excellent penetration but needed to be altered to increase speed of killing. One day I will have this data uploaded to the KB. I have so much data that still needs to be uploaded, another 35 cartridges or so.

Re: Speer Deep Curl
Actually the Deep Curl is not the same as the Fusion, the Fusion is a boat tail bullet while the Deep Curl is a concave flat base, the Deep Curl also has a longer ogive, the only thing they have in common is the electroplating method of construction as far as I can see. The most notable difference as far as the 7mm-08 is concerned is the fact that they don't make a 140gr Deep Curl only 160 and 175gr both are on the heavy side for the 7mm-08 and I am limited to around 2600fps at the muzzle with the 160s using H380.
I am somewhat less concerned with the 6.5x55 because that Tikka shoots EVERYTHING well and I have a host of 120-140gr bullets that are proven deer/hog stoppers, but my Browning 7mm-08 is much more picky, I am limited to 120gr Pro Hunters, 140gr-160 SGKs or 160gr Deep Curls they are the only bullets I could get to group worth a darn.

Re: Speer Deep Curl
BTW the 7mm-08 does not shoot any factory ammo well, 5" groups at 100 were the norm! Fusion ammo was no exception it was all over the place. H380 and Big Game handloads are the only thing that group well.

Re: Speer Deep Curl
Hi Jared, just having a look at it now and as I go through and compare the various Fusion bullets in 6.5 and 30 cal with Deep Curl bullets, the BC's are slightly different for the two brands. I was led to believe that both are from the same maker. It is still possible that both bullets are made to different specs by Speer. The 145gr Hotcor versus the 150gr Federal Hotcor load is a good example but I would need evidence of this. Besides, why would Federal use the name Hotcor but then avoid using the name Deep Curl? The more I look into this, the wider the disparities. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Looks like you will have to get out and shoot a few animals and observe performance. Your 160gr GameKing load would be good on pigs if you find the bonded bullet too stout out past 100 yards.
