Ricardo LaborinLadies and Gents,I've been scouting rifle availabilities in the US, new models, of all makers in the more "premium" side of things (particularly the Bergara Premier and Nosler 21), for an addition with all-around capabilities, 150 to 195grs at 2700 to 2950fps range. Filtering for sensible weight (7 to 8.5lbs sans optics and ammo), sensible form (no Monte Carlo or super slim stocks), sensible materials (no carbon fiber), and sad to report that it seems the .270, .30-06 and 7mmRM have fallen off the map!!! Only the .308 Win and .300WM remain available as standard in those production runs. My heart was set on a 06', but will take a .308 instead. KYP. Cheers, Ricardo. Ps: last post was about the RemAge / Alternut but it seems to be the same hassle to get a rifle and a barrel to my native lands, so better to go for the full gun. |

Scott StruifRe: Rifle Chambering in the US - Where are the Greats?Hi Ricardo. Have you ruled out a Model 70? Its available in 30-06, 3 different barrel lengths. |

Lane SalvatoRe: Rifle Chambering in the US - Where are the Greats?Ricardo, I thought I'd just look for you and found the 30-06 at Sportsman's Warehouse in Albuquerque in a Remington 700 CDL. That's a good middle of the road rifle. They have others but that one stood out to me. You could easily have it shipped to an FFL. Just a thought if you really want a 30-06. |

Ricardo LaborinRe: Rifle Chambering in the US - Where are the Greats?Thank you Scott and Lane. It seems that the only M70 worth taking a crack at is the Super Grade, since the rest carry pencil thin barrels. The Rem 700 BDL now back in production is the same deal, definitely good plain vanilla rifles. What surprised me is that in the higher end market, those chamberings are gone (especially Bergara Premier and Nosler 21). Will KYP. Cheers. |

Nathan FosterRe: Rifle Chambering in the US - Where are the Greats?Hi Ricardo, yes its getting hard to find anything with a sensible contour and with a decent mag length. As you say, the 2.0 is not available in .30-06 (and also has a .5" muzzle). The standard rifle including the Ridge might fit the bill for you though. Lane is shooting the standard rifle with the 165gr SST factory ammo, obtaining sub MOA out of the box.A Vanguard fitted with a Boyds or B&C stock (the one used by Nosler) could also work. There should be another post floating around here from Dan Schindler, relating his success with a recent Vanguard 06 purchase. |

Ricardo LaborinRe: Rifle Chambering in the US - Where are the Greats?Thank you Nathan.I've been perusing the Ridge in particular and it looks very sexy with that thick barrel (for a sporter). The stock looks a little iffy but Bergara says they'll fit any Rem 700 aftermarket, and I happen to have an HS Precision PSS 010 laying around, should mate beautifully. KYP. |
