Chris McKoyI have recently upgraded my Sendero stock to a Christensen arms carbon unit, it came as bare carbon and I'm wanting to coat it with a matt clear.Does anybody have any suggestions about the type of clear that would be suited to this task, ideally without hurting the carbon? Many thanks |

faulknerRe: Carbon rifle stock coatingI think to be on the safe side a email to Christensen is in order,,, But a Durakote or Cerakote might be the ticket.Would be great to hear how you like the the stock once you get it sorted! Aj |

Chris McKoyRe: Carbon rifle stock coatingYes Jason, I am selling the Sendero stock to cover costs - it will need re-bedding.Thanks faulkner - They replied that once the carbon is hardened, it is pretty much inert, so do whatever I like with it :S I might just do a bit more research to be on the safe side. |

Nathan FosterRe: Carbon rifle stock coatingHi Chris, treat carbon the same as normal fiber glass. The approaches used for painting are the same as the boat building and autobody industry. There are two types of clear coat, enamel and two pot / two pack epoxy paint. Epoxy is much stronger, enamel is cheaper. You could if you want to, take your stock into an autobody shop and ask them to spray coat the stock during an autobody job. You could also take the job to any fiberglass workshop- snowboard, boat, surfboard. Matt clear coats are a new technology, only been around a few years. You have to understand that the higher the sheen, the greater the protection. In years gone by, folk would simply dull off a high sheen with scotchbrite. You also need to keep in mind that the stock already has an epoxy finish because it was an epoxy and carbon fiber mold. If you add another layer of 2 pac epoxy paint, it will simply be one more protective layer. If you went with AJ's recommendation, you could opt for a camo job to finish the rifle. Certainly gives you a bit of room to get creative. |

Chris McKoyRe: Carbon rifle stock coatingThanks Nathan, I do like the idea of adding another protective layer - not thrilled with the idea of a gloss stock, but it might be worth it in the long run. Could you recommend anybody who does duracoat etc?On another note - how is your workload for the new year? it would be good to get this rifle to you for an accurizing job, chuck me an email if you could. |

faulknerRe: Carbon rifle stock coatingI could be wrong but I thing the DuraKote can be bought in a kit and done at home, and the Cerakote is a shop job with a hot curing process. Something to look at anyways! Enjoy, Aj |
