Rob BirdI've been using a version of the Nosler Custom Competition 168gr BTHP in my K31 (7.5x55) competition rifle. They are made for Midsouth Shooter's Supply by Nosler and I assume, by the looks, that they are the same bullet. It's a sweet shooting rifle and load. The question: does anyone have experience with this bullet in hunting? Thinking whitetails. |

Nathan FosterRe: Nosler Custom Competition for hunting?Hi Rob, it will be fine for your Swiss rifle / open sight ranges. The Nosler BTHP does expand and break up when used at close to moderate ranges. It starts to pin hole at an impact velocity of around 2000fps (best above 2200fps). Note that with such a small HP, results can and do vary. Therefore, to encourage wounding performance, it is a good idea to drag the tip across a stone for a few strokes. Following this, you may wish to apply a needle file to the HP using the same motion as you would if cleaning a primer pocket. A subtle alteration is fine, no need for anything dramatic. |

Rob BirdRe: Nosler Custom Competition for hunting?Thank you. It may be pushing it, since my match load has an MV of 2200 fps! But as it hits 2000 fps at 115 yards, maybe it'll be ok. Or I can just load up something else. A "bad" load for it is as good as an excellent 30-30 load! |

Nathan FosterRe: Nosler Custom Competition for hunting?Hi Rob, in that case, just open the HP a little bit more. It will be fine.Count your strokes across the bench stone to obtain a roughly uniform length, then apply the needle file. |

Rob BirdRe: Nosler Custom Competition for hunting?Great to know! Does the factory meplat size/shape cause it to disrupt inconsistently? |

Rob BirdRe: Nosler Custom Competition for hunting?Oops, I meant "upset" not "disrupt". |
