David LaingHi Nathan,Thanks for the earlier replies. A friend of mine uses the 7mm08 and swears by it..but i felt it was a little under gunned, in sense is a smaller necked down 308 type case and typically smaller bullets used. Suspect is borderline even for Sika bush hunting, unless right on the spot each time...versus 308 or others.Would be interested on your views on the 7mm08 versus 308 On reverse I had another friend say stick with a 44 Magnum (ruger semi auto) with big heavy slow rounds at 230 grains for Bush work on any sika or reds (under 100m) and also buy a 308 for tops or longer shots..Does this make sense or is it nonsense? |

David LaingRe: 7mm08 ?I think you will find it comes down to projectile choice. 7mm is fine for those small deer.iv read your other thread too. I think you will have a much better understanding of what you want if you buy nathans books. (I don't get paid to say that, but im sure others will agree). in this game there is so many different ways to go because people have different ideas. I knew little at the start but nathans advise has proved to be spot on over time. if your spending $1000 on a rifle whats about $100 (I forget the actual cost) on some info/books to get something you will actually like and want to keep/use, over getting the wrong or not really what suits you rifle, having to learn the hard way, its peanuts! ull burn it up in ammo. im often thinking about another rifle or what id build if I was going to get into another aspect of shooting or hunting. and the first book gets pulled out as something to go re-read, its just so handy to have. anyway, good luck chasing those sika. |

David LaingRe: 7mm08 ?oh the second part of your question....theres a saying... jack of all trades, master of none. in other words, you can get one rifle to do everything, but it wont be the best at doing everything. in the long run you will find you will want different rifles for different jobs. but an excuse for another rifle to own isn't a bad thing. |

Jim MoseleyRe: 7mm08 ?Just my 2 cents worth...... anything a 308 can do, the 7-08 can do it better! Grain for grain the 7mm bullets have a higher BC. |

My 308 will push out a 208 Amax at 2500....... your turn. For NZ hunting 7mm08 and 308 can be used for the same game, mostly out to the same ranges, as long as the projectile is appropriate. 7mm08 is not "undergunned" I would use it out to 400 on Tahr and Sika are not armour plated....... |

If there was a 7mm 208 Amax, it would out perform the 30 cal. My post said "grain for grain" |
