Powder and bullet shortages in the U.S.

Are you guys down under experiencing a shortage of reloading powder
and bullets like we are here in the States?
Some say it is a result of hoarding because of the gun control policies of the
Democratic Party, Obama and the media. Others think maybe our liberal
government is directly the cause of the shortage.

we sure are! except for maybe powder, a lot of guys use the adi powder which is from Australia.
the amax (mostly 7mm) is like hens teeth, some are asking big money for them on the local auction sight. but there is suppose to be a special order for n.z soon.

same with primers, hard to get but suppose to be an order here soon.

Oh you also have heard about this special order.. It's due next week, grand total of 2000 162 AMAX for the whole country.

Re: Powder and bullet shortages in the U.S.
Luckily I have enough 162 grain Amax bullets in 7mm for the late October
elk season here. And sufficient 140 grain Partition bullets in 6.5 for the
mid-October whitetail/mule deer season. But very little left for practicing.
And I am running short of RL22 powder I use reloading my 6.5x55 rounds.
I have a feeling that these shortages are a result of politics.

is that it? I put in for 500 at one shop. shops were telling me there will be plenty to go around, how many do you want, like it wasn't a problem.
it was suppose to be here a while ago now.

I was fortunate to shop at a Cabelas store in January that had pretty much all of my projectile needs. Primers were in the $ 30 to $40 range. I buy my powder locally and mail order with a group. Since I am from New York where gun laws have hampered the ability of law abiding citizens to get reloading components mail order, we began hoarding in 2013. Sorry guys... Bullets can be had at various mail order houses. We have shortages in a few caliber not sure why. There is a push on over here to boycott Barnes bullets since they have been politically motivated to promote the no lead substitute. I don't care for their bullets anyway. To be honest, the premium hunting bullets have always been scarce.

Hi to all
Last night ,Monday 9/6/2014, a Current Affairs T.V. program here in Australia did a story covering the current shortage of ammunition and reloading components , affecting firearm users in this country.
The general outlook for the future was rather negative to say the least.

The availability of ammunition and components to Firearm owners has always been our " Achilles Heel " and legislators in this country have already moved to exploit this fact.

I am very aware of the ramifications of making Politically motivated comments on a Forum such as this , so I apologize if I am out of line . BUT the way some Philosophers in this country think is " Well if you cannot get ammunition ! Why do you need that gun ???

Yes. Well fortunately the Russians are still making ammo by the ton. So now instead of buying a pack of ammo or projectiles for our beloved rifle to use over a period month we can entertain the ides of burning through a case of ammo per week in our $250 Mosins.

This will end Les. It may take a while but it will end. I just hope it ends in a smooth fashion. Do you have any pro gun lobbies in Australia? We have some good folks helping at parliament level and hunting is gradually becoming seen as a healthy activity as it once was. I do find it odd. For several years there has been a huge push to accept diversity (e.g gay rights- no comments on this please). Yet other groups are thrown under the bus for their lifestyle choices? But again, this is also coming around with hunting TV shows and cooking shows which involve hunting etc. So try to be patient and try not get too upset by comments in the media.

If you ever meet an anti gun type, do your best to be your kind and caring self- not just in action but also thought. Any group with the word anti behind it tends to bring out the worst in people, thereby justifying "anti" stances. Try to apply a rule of opposites if possible. We cannot change a person blinded by hatred or extreme ignorance so why waste energy adding to their black hole of fear. Some anti folk come have negative past experiences and no doubt some simply wish to assert a predatory level of control over others but either way, it is fear driven.

We cannot let fear dictate how we live our lives but we cannot avoid it either. I think this is the biggest challenge for humanity. By the same token, fighting fear simply adds to it. Accept it, overide it. If you want to be proactive, join a pro gun lobby but remember to be kind to the anti gun types for both theirs and your sake. This is just so important. Something we have to remind ourselves of no matter how hard it seems. Kind- but steadfast.

hi les, did they mention the adi company at all? I notice you didn't say powder. im not sure how big that company is you would just expect the Australian government to support its companies. (im not saying there not, I just don't know) as far as I know its powder has never been a problem to get.

Hi Nathan
I agree with you entirely and I can assure you I am not one of the " radical ", " big brother ", " paranoid " , " doom & gloom " clan - BUT I understand the meaning of Gradualism -- ( I employed this principal myself in my younger days , whenever I met a new lady !! )

Hi Jason
The story did not mention ADI powder - Sales of reloading powder in Australia are recorded at point of sale i.e. name & address of purchaser and quantity purchased - I fully agree with sensible controls like this -- it is the sudden dry up of loaded ammo , primers and particularly projectiles that is of concern at present. Of course when supplies do gradually become available again, one can wager prices will be exorbitant .

Things are returning to normal in Canada but the prices as Les mentioned have been rising, I paid $330 for a 8 lbs of H1000 were a year ago it was $270.

As far as "anti's" are concerned they are going to have a "run" following the very sad shooting deaths of 3 RCMP offices by a whack job in eastern Canada. So sad and such a waist!

No worries Les, I fully understand. Aspects of my post were a self monitoring pep talk as much as anything.

funny you say that les, you make the powder and the buyer gets there name etc recorded. our shops buy it, and reloaders from them. we have no details recorded.

Re: Powder and bullet shortages in the U.S.
Hi All,

I have only just started reloading for my rifles and have been fortunate enough to get hold of enough stock for my needs in that department … at least for the immediate future.

The story is very different for my shotgun ammo. My fellow skeet shooters and I have been dismayed at the sudden run down in powder and primer stocks in recent times. I reload all of my 410, 28g & 20g shells and at the moment I have far more shells than I do powder and primers - shot is also an issue.

I hope this does not continue to trend across the board. I'm not sure what the respective distributors are doing but if anyone has any feedback in that regard it would be appreciated, I'm sure they are as concerned as we are.

I have heard that a recent contract awarded to ADI by the US Military may have been the catalyst for a downturn in availability domestically - not sure how true it is but it is what I've heard??

Cheers
Steve
