Shawn BevinsRe: Restricted items, rifle parts???If the word gun, firearm or weapon is included in the description, it is probably restricted. We are going through a tizzy now with anything gun related. |

Bob MavinRe: Restricted items, rifle parts???Well I suppose you can't be too carful, someone could throw them and cause a nasty injury!!!I found a set of screw here in Australia at Pro Cal Trading so all is good. I'm going to bed my 30-06 with Nathans bedding compound and fit the new hex head screws. Cheers Bob |

Nathan FosterRe: Restricted items, rifle parts???You know, a funny thing happened to me yesterday, something I feel compelled to mention.A client turned up with a Tikka T3 rifle he wanted me to look over. I wanted to give the rifle a quick inspection so I stripped it down. I undid the front king screw slowly that I could gauge / feel the torque. The front king screw was just past finger tight. I then moved on to the rear screw which was tighter, about 35lb- not too tight. But as I went to undo the screw, I discovered that the torx (star) inlet of the screw head was slightly malformed and my driver was able to turn while the screw stayed put (like a stripped head). I quickly changed the star driver in case it was caused by any wear in my driver. The new star driver suffered the same. Nevertheless, by kicking the driver over to an offset angle, I was able to loosen and remove the tang screw. I asked the client where he bought the rifle. It came from a good gun store owned by a husband and wife team, I have known them since I was a teen. So I contacted my old friend, told him about the tang screw and asked him to contact Beretta NZ. The result- as per usual they stated that there was no way that it could be a faulty part- it had to be end user error from over torquing. Anyone who is familiar with the Tikka design will know that the bottom metal (plastic with metal washers) would disintegrate before this could occur. The gun store owner was told that king screws are only sold in two packs (front and rear) at a price of NZ $80 (which is not a great deal different from AU or US dollars). How someone can charge $80 for $2 worth of machine screws is beyond me. Fortunately these are basic M6 button head screws, no big deal to replace. Nevertheless, it is the principle of the matter that concerns me. I do not believe it is right to take such an advantage of people. It really knocked me back. On this forum, throughout this community and throughout my books, I try to encourage an attitude of patience and tolerance as a means to achieve success whether working on a rifle, hunting or in our communication with each other. This does however test my patience to the limit. I can see no justification for this completely self serving attitude. $80 for a screw. It may sound like a good deal in some other context, but not this one. |

Les MulloyRe: Restricted items, rifle parts???Hi to allAs I said a week or so ago-- It is called "gradualism" -- firearm owners are not popular in many circles of opinion -- so it is being gradually being made more expensive , gradually being made more difficult to get consumable items , gradually more and more individuals simply give up involvement with firearms , gradually memberships of gun clubs are dwindling etc. etc. etc. So gradually we will all die out - become extinct- forgotten souls cursed and belittled by the pages of history - ground into insignificance by the sands of time - never more to roam the green, green grass of home and relish the perfume of the wild flower Oh Dear -- I think I need a pig skin wig like Nathans !!!!!! I wonder how much a set of Lawn Bowls cost these days ????? |
