Mystery goings on down by Oamaru lately
A farmer has had nearly 200 sheep shot by unknown persons.
some were not yet dead and had to be put down, strange thing is they have chopped up a few and cant find any bullets????
either they arent any good at doing autopsies or something funny/weird going on...my thinking is it has to be a FMJ heavy bullet but you would think that some would have tumbled and stayed inside or been able to be found in dirt close to a carcase....

Re: what did they use???
Sorry to say but it could be a bit of both Mike. A number of cops aren't really in touch with this sort of thing anymore and I don't know what our forensics folk do either but I don't think they get involved with this type of crime- a shame becuase it gets young technicians out of the lab and into the field- good training.

Probably as you say- FMJ. If the entry and exit wounds are extremely difficult to determine, it will be .223 FMJ. If the entry and exit wounds are discernible, probably 7.62x39 fired from an SKS- left overs from when these rifles and ammo came into the country on mass and were adopted as culling tools. During the red book license days, many were stored in farm sheds, easy to steal, whether the intention be deliberate crime or simply dead beat friends of farmers sons "borrowing" a rifle permanently. Fortunately not too many of these rifles left- corrosive Iragi ammo has taken care of that and will take care of the rest.

Shell casings may be present if fired from an SKS. Hard to find though.

A shame for the farmer, he will be feeling very powerless. He needs some trail cams. The kind of dipshits that usually do this sort of thing are also generally small town braggers. It would not take much initiative to find them. Listen for a bit at the local pub, see who the tough talkers are, a few random house searches. Age group 18 to 26. Its not friggin rocket science sorry.

yip thats pretty much what I was thinking...strange that no one heard shots it being a small farm..and it was done over two days which is even weirder, Oamaru is a small town as you say someone will brag.

Re: what did they use???
not disputing you at all Mike
but a long while ago a farmer I know's next door neighbor had complained about a horse being shot from the road, myself and my farmer friend took the front end loader over to help bury the horse, we examined the horse to find no evidence of bullet hole's or anything to prove it had been shot, the farmer had just assumed the horse to have been shot as it just died with no sickness,
it worry's me mate as we in ozzie already are treated like mass murderer's if we have firearms and don't need any more bad publicity so I am a bit skeptical and want proof when these accusation's are made.
for 200 sheep to be shot there has to be something that prove's it to be they were shot? nobody is that clever to get away with that amount of carnage,
a 223 with a moderator still has noise, have you seen the sheep? if so you would have seen blood around entry and exit hole's, they would have seen damage from a full metal jacket projectile going through when they cut the animals up, it really needs to be investigated properly
as you said Mike strange, if it is a shooting I hope they catch who ever but if it's not I hope they can find what has happened , I also hope the poor farmer can cover his losses

It could have been one of them alien cattle mutilation thingymebobs. If so, I feel that Hornady are really letting us down by only producing Zombie Max ammo.

Re: what did they use???
I recall a similar case here in liberal Northern California a few years ago. 8 sheep were killed and the initial news paper reports blamed guns /gun owners for the carnage. The liberals had a good deal to say about this of course. After closer review by the department of fish and game the nights work turned out to be that of our protected mountain lion. As for the liberals well that shut 'em up.

Re: what did they use???
Maybe --- just maybe --- they used bullets with holes drilled through them ??? ---the result obviously being that the hole allows the head of a bullet to disappear up it's own arse

Re: what did they use???
It has just been announced that the 200 sheep were killed by dogs. No evidence of shooting and no one heard any shots, let alone 200.

Re: what did they use???
During the last incident, I was contacted by a representative farmer and also a vet who was at a loss. Unfortunately, the police in the area destroyed the evidence before I was able to offer any help.

I have not heard anything since. All I could suggest was that if it happened again, heads be frozen and couriered to me for study. Haven't had time to listen to the latest radio report sorry.
