John DengateHi Nathan,Just wondering what stopped you from using Devcon like this fellow has (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1Wbrj9yJpA), and what advantages you were aiming to achieve with the Matchgrade product, rather than an existing compound like Devcon. regards, John D |

Les MulloyRe: Devcon bedding compoundHi JohnI watched the video you mentioned with interest - seemed to get a reasonable result with the Devcon product. - only question is how durable that product is long term. I have used Nathan Fosters product twice now and have had excellent results with it - I am currently waiting for my third order of his product and intend to eventually rebed all of my 15 rifles with his matchgrade product due to it's extremely hard and metallic finish - plus the extremely detailed instructions which are included in the price - plus the assistance offered for any action type I may wish to work on, which is offered willingly. Personally I would rather spend my money on a proven product developed by a fellow shooter , that I have full confidence in using. No offence intended to Devcon, but who makes it ? Stephanie FosterRe: Devcon bedding compoundHi John, I very rarely join in on the forums but somehow your question just begged me to answer you. I have watched Nath develop Matchgrade products and I can tell you that these are products specifically designed to be used to bed rifles. I watched Nath experiment with viscosity and metal ratios for the better part of 16/18 months, until he got to where he felt it was right for the job. But really that is neither here nor there because, as someone who personally has bedded LOTS of rifles I can tell you this shit is the good stuff.BUT that is still not the point. Do you know what the most singular thing lacking with Devcon products is? Go on, have a guess. OK, I will tell you: Information on how to bed a rifle. Your question is "and what advantages you were aiming to achieve with the Matchgrade product"? Simple answer, support and education. Devcon are great generic epoxy products however you can ring them till the cows come home and you are not going to get a detailed set of instructions, including all the potential pitfalls, on the subject of how to bed your rifle. When Nath set about developing MatchGrade we had bedded a lot of rifles. The number one question that he asked was how can we make it easy for people to bed their own rifles. We literally sat at the table and discussed bedding rifles and everything the job entails and what we felt would be necessary to receive in a DIY bedding kit. And so it went on. So the advantages of Matchgrade bedding product is: A) it is in fact specifically designed as a bedding product - Devcon isn't. B) it comes with a wealth of knowledge, knowledge freely shared by the way, to ensure that people get the results they desire. I dare you to skype Devcon at 9.30 at night because your bedding job has gone to shit and you need help - good luck with that! Steph Foster |

Shawn BevinsRe: Devcon bedding compoundI have not tried Stephanie & Nathan's :-) product yet, however I do have experience with a few Devcon products. We use epoxy at work for various applications and I have bed a rifle with Devcon 10110 Steel Epoxy. The negatives are:1.) Air Bubbles. 2.) Set Time 3.) Viscosity After looking at my bedding and some other jobs, I need more practice but the negatives are partly to blame. Another thing was, I got bad advice from a forum of so called experts. After reading Nathans book, I can see some glaring mistakes in my original attempt. I plan to redo one bedding job and complete a 2nd with his bedding compound. hope that helps.. |

John DengateRe: Devcon bedding compoundThanks for the great answer Steph,I was just trying to understand the technical differences between the various compounds that are used around the world for bedding. Devcon was just one example that I came across. Sorry if it sounded like I was criticising your work. I certainly wasn't. Regards, John D PS Do people really Skype you at 9.30 at night to discuss rifle bedding? That doesn't seem reasonable. |

Stephanie FosterRe: Devcon bedding compoundHi John, no worries. It is always so easy to miss the intention behind a computer post and easy to misunderstand the tone. I have seen it on a horse forum I visit occasionally, people getting the wrong end of the stick - and then beating each other with it.We have in fact been contacted at some very strange hours by guys wanting help with their bedding jobs. Since we do ship our compound around the world I guess some difficulties with time zones is to be expected. It doesn't happen that often and we do really encourage people who buy our product to come to us for help if they run in to problems. So it's our own fault for being So Darn Helpful!
