Barry ShoneHello everyone. I am in the planning stage of building a long range rifle. I have a savage 116L action and rifle basix trigger in hand. I have a Stockade stock and a shilen barrel on order. The longest cartridge I can get to work reliably in the action is 3.350". I am sending Shilen a couple of dummy rounds so they can throat the barrel to suit my cartridge of choice. I like the 162 gr SST but don't know if a COAL of 3.350" is adequate or will I be stifling the round's potential by limiting case capacity. I plan on using a Leupold 1 piece mount and Burris Signature rings. Leupold long ago earned my loyalty and will get the scope sale. Though I don't yet know which model I will choose. The decisions regarding parts were a balance between buying the best quality and working within my budget comfort.Any comments or suggestions would be well received and greatly appreciated. Barry |

Nathan FosterRe: 7mm RM projectHi Barry, I have come across a type of almost standard short throat with various reamers. This sets the max COAL with the SST at 84.8mm (3.339") and the A-MAX at 86.3mm (3.398"). From this you can adopt a .5mm or 1mm jump (20-40 thou). Velocity seems unneffected. You could possibly go a tad shorter than this without ill effect. So yes, its doable.I wouldn't mind seeing a photo of your particular magazine though. I just want to check if it can be unblocked in any way. You can send this directly to my email if you like. I am not so hot on the idea of a Leupold for long range work, I do not like the calibration of the turrets. Up to you though. Just promise me you wilol have a good think about optics before committing. |

Barry ShoneRe: 7mm RM projectThank you for your observations Nathan. I may be jumping to conclusions regarding the magazine. I used the 30-06 mag box on the donor rifle to measure/test. I will revisit this in the near future when I have the new mag box in hand.Regarding the scope I guess Leupold won't miss just one little sale. I have heard good things about Vortex. Their viper HST 4-16x44 interests me. But I am very much in the blind in this regard. In closing I would like to share a story about Leupold though. Many years ago at a time in my life when I couldn't rub two nickels together, my grand father gave me a rifle. It was topped with a Leupold 4 x scope. But The reticle had been dislodged. I sent the the scope to Leupold requesting a cost estimate for repairs. Time went by and one day the scope came back. It was repaired and looked brand new. There was a note in the box saying there was no charge that Leupold scopes were guaranteed for life. As a butcher in a small family store, customer service and integrity are at the top of the list for me. With that simple act Leupold engrained in me a business philosophy that has brought much satisfaction through the years. |

Nathan FosterRe: 7mm RM projectHi Barry, I like the basic line of Leupold scopes and still recomend them for general hunting. But you are now wanting to enter a different game. Things like scope calibration can be deal breakers. It is for this reason that I cannot recommend the Vortex, no matter how many million good reviews it gets. Please look at the Sightron SIII line of scopes. You can see more on this in the optics forum section of this site. |

Barry ShoneRe: 7mm RM projectThank you Nathan. I reckon since I am having a good long wait for my barrel I can spend the time saving for the right scope. As usual your advise is greatly appreciated.Barry |

Barry ShoneRe: 7mm RM projectHello everyone, thought I would follow-up on my work in progress.Still waiting on the stock delivery. I got impatient so I switch barreled the 7 mm rem mag barrel on to a .35 whelen I put together in aSavage factory synthetic stock. It was my first bedding job. A little rough with some spots along the top edge where the bedding compound sucked back a bit. But functionally a success shooting 1/2" groups. The savage barrel nut occupies the parallel portion of the barrel boss. I filled the grooves on the outside of the barrel nut with plasticine and bedded to the parallel portion of the barrel nut to provide the barrel support. Seems to be working. Nathan the coal of 3.340 worked out to a jump of .012 which seems to suit the magazine and the chamber as well. Thanks for that. The load that works is 162 gr sst, remington brass, remington lrm primers and 63 grains of reloader 22. I ended up putting a nikon 4.5-14x 40 buck master with mil dot reticle on top. I have had the scope for quite a few years but haven't used it to dial targets yet. Time will tell how it tracks. All in all I am well pleased with this treasure hunt sort of project. |
