john feyereisnI bought a savage model 11vt in 308win last year, his exact rifle is not on their website because its only sold at a certain sporting goods chain here in the US, Dicks sporting goods. Its a 308 win with a 24 inch varmint barrel, accutrigger, detachable magazine like the axis uses and a black plastic synthetic stock, not fiberglass, no accustock, with zero bedding work. I removed the very cheap scope and traded it for a used chainsaw ;) I do not have a large number of rounds through this rifle but so far it will shoot 150gr nosler balistic tips with varget into 1/2 moa groups with much much less copper fouling than my other rifles, I was not expecting that without being properly bedded in a quality stock, I bought the rifle expecting that I would want to upgrade the stock pretty soon, but I have a hard time messing with a rifle this cheap that shoots this well. Have I just been lucky so far or are they improving the plastic stocks, maybee bedding them better from the factory? I have not had the action out of the stock yet to see how it fits. Any thoughts? |

Nathan FosterRe: Why does this cheap savage shoot so well with the plastic stock?HI John, its a hit and miss affair. It all depends on the individual harmonics of the rifle. There is a 7mm WSM locally, a basic Weather Warrior that shoots a half minute as is. Others need bedding or upgrading and bedding. One thing you sometimes have to be careful of is the stock material weakening or flexing over time and under torque. The other problem is dramatic changes in groups size and or POI depending on exact torque settings after maintenance pull downs. Another factor is power. Sometimes a rifle will yield good results with mild loads, but the platform cannot handle full power loads. All things to monitor. |

john feyereisnRe: Why does this cheap savage shoot so well with the plastic stock? Thanks for the reply Nathan, i recently found the stock stabilizing compound you have. I still feel that bedding and stabilizing it is the "right" or best thing to do. I have looked at ways to stiffen these plastic stocks in the past and your product looks to be a much better solution than i have seen.Keep up the good work great site you have here! |

Jared ThibodauxRe: Why does this cheap savage shoot so well with the plastic stock?I have no idea how Savage makes such an accurate rifle on such a cheap stock but they sure do, I have owned half a dozen Savages now and none of them had a high end stock or accustock. I have horse traded some of them over the years but I have kept my 270 WSM and 30-06. While they have all shot good they might not shoot god with the bullet you wanted, ALL Savages are bullet picky in my experience, I was hoping to work up a super long range low drag load for the WSM but alas it does not like long pointy bullets but is literally a one hole shooter with 150gr SGKs and 63gr of RL22 (3,003fps) Should be potent enough since my longest passable shot where I hunt is around 550yd. That one is especially weird because the stock is warped and pressing against the barrel, I would fix it but why mess with it while it is shooting like that? While there is little rhyme or reason to their bullet picky nature I will say that while most bullets have been hit or miss the Sierra Game Kings have worked well in all of them, and Speers very similar BTSP have worked well in all I have tried them in. |

john feyereisnRe: Why does this cheap savage shoot so well with the plastic stock?Jared, a relative of mine who does gunsmith work and shoots and loads alot who has probobly forgotten more than i will ever know about loading and guns once said "sometimes one rifle will like a hornady or a nosler or whatever but the bullets that always shoot are the sierras" |

Jim MoseleyRe: Why does this cheap savage shoot so well with the plastic stock?I've got the Savage M11 also, but in a 243. Paid $300. Just loaded some 95 gr Berger Classics and it's shooting .75 at 200 yds. Got a friend of mine who owns a large farm and he bought the 7mag years ago and has kill 600 to 700 deer with his. Cleans it once year whether it needs it or not. The rifle stays in his truck. Covered in rust and dirt, but it still shoots lights out. Go figure! Savage just makes a great rifle. |
