I have been trialling reloads with my Remington 700 sps in 308(fitted with a hs precision stock, vortex viper pst 6-24) but cant get it to shoot accurately I have trialled various loads with adi 2208 with 165 ssts and 150 nosler accubonds trigger is lightened to less than 2 lb and I have had a very capable shooter shooting it for me, I have had a look down the barrel for fouling, copper fouled barrel, barrel appears to have a bit of pitting is there other factors that could be contributing to lack of accuracy? could the barrel be the main issue? projectile selection? not found the sweet spot with load development? frustrating spending time on a rifle and not getting the results I want, any good advice would be much appreciated guys

We will need some more info Jasper!

Where is the pitting?

What do the groups look like?

Rifle age, condition, is it bedded into the stock?

As for pills, interlocks have always been a easy to work with go-to projectile if you suspect the others. But either you have tried should work, have you tried any factory stuff?

Re: rifle wont shoot less than 1 1/4 inch
stock has alloy bedding block not truly bedded as such I can only see pitting in the muzzle end as I can only look down it with a torch, I bought some factory ammo the other day and shot them off but didn't get any grouping less than 2inches could be my shooting though hence why when I test my reloads I get some one else to shoot them , the better groups we get are general good triangles two close about an inch and generally the 3rd hole slightly further away

Never been impressed with factory Remington 700s, everyone ogles over them but I prefer Savages and Tikkas in facotry form.

Hi Jaspur, this may simply be a case of your COAL being wrong. You are cuurently set too long and concentricty will be very poor.

Set COAL to 71mm, then rework up loads.

See COAL article in the rifle accuracy section of this site for more info as to why your COAL was wrong at 1 thou jump in the .308.

There should be another thread here somewhere close which covers the same info and also powder charges.

Bedding may need addressing, plus other factors as described in my last book (Accurizing).

Stick with it, you will get there.

All the best.

Hi Jaspur, start here. http://www.ballisticstudies.com/Resources/Discussion+Forums/x_forum/17/thread/4765.html
In this thread there is another link to more detailed info on working up a load.
Good luck.

Re: rifle wont shoot less than 1 1/4 inch
Yeah 1 thou off the lands is a big ask for a stock 308 using 150-165 grain boat tail projectiles. Not much left in the neck holding on.

Mine have all been loaded to 71mm coal (or less for short pills) under Nathans direction, tuning harmonics with powder charge.

If you are down to 1 1/4 inch you are not that far away, the pitting may not be a huge issue?
With my Rem 308 l found lug contact had a big effect on it's ability to group consistantly, lapping a must.

Hopefully Nathans reloading book will be out soon to help out!!

Re: rifle wont shoot less than 1 1/4 inch
Tried the seating depths you recomended had no luck. Managed to shoot a 4 shot sub moa group with siera match kings 155grain i was advised to seat them into the lands to see if my barrel was any good , iv found out that my rifle has a long throat ,now iv found out my barrel is alright how do i go about seating my ssts? should i seat them into the lands aswel? though the siera bullets were barely seated into the brass . The overall case length to the ogive of the siera projectile is 2.310 inches the measurement on the ssts that shoot 1-1/4 are siting at 2.180 inches what would be your guys advise on what i should do?

Re: rifle wont shoot less than 1 1/4 inch
The long seating will create two problems. The first is that you have to single feed as your ammo is too long for your mag box. Secondly, the ammo will lose concentricity easily during handling in the field- basically its easy to bump the projectiles out of alignment.

By seating close to the lands, you changed the harmonic timing. The same could have been done with a crimp die or seating deeper still into the case after initial concentric seating failed to produce good groups.

Several approaches. Some are practical, others not so.
