yes you sure can...in fact if using AR2213sc about half the load data you will see calls for it. I picked up a heap of them at good price so use them in x39 as well.
Ive had it explained its a bit like running hotter spark plugs, a bigger brighter hotter flame better for igniting big lots of powder.

cheers for that mike its what i want to hear. doing some load development on some v max's so ill use them up on that and buy some standard large primers for the 150gr interlocks load im already using in case there different pressure spike or velocity

Re: magnum primers in 270win
I'm going to have to try this. What did it improve? Is AR2213 more similar to 4350 or 4831? How much did your velocity jump with the Mag primers? How much would you drop powder charges to rework up a load?

I'm pushing 150 ABLR, 150 VLD, and soon 140 SST.

Thanks
Jake

I didn't get any noticeable speed change with mag primers in my mates 270 so I used magnums in it cos I buy them in bulk for my 7mm. Running 60grn win 780 cci mag prim 140sst 3040

Hdgdon 4831sc is ADI AR3312sc same powder in different container
there are charts available that show what is what.
looking at older Vs new manuals at one stage the two powders may have been different but dont seem to be now. even old data shows them very similar with only subtle differences in powder weights and velocity.
I use AR2213sc in my .270 and find it great.

Re: magnum primers in 270win
Mike and Chris, thanks for the info. I will try to get my hands on some 4831 this coming week. Buddy was saying its great out of his 7mm mag as well.

Chris, did you notice any difference with shooting mag primers? cleaner, more accurate, etc? I have bulk of both.

Mike, how much 4831/ar3312 are you pushing? I'll start lower and work up.

Thanks much

Jake

Re: magnum primers in 270win
no didn't get any difference. it is a tikka t3 that i struggled to find a sweet spot up high (found one at2780) i tried both primers to play round with burn rate but didn't change. had to set bullet down to cannelure to get speed and accuracy

Re: magnum primers in 270win
130 grn pill 54grns of AR2203sc mild load but it seemed to suit my old worn barrel with Taipan projectiles...which I used up shooting wallabies BEFORE finding out what they are good for...

Re: magnum primers in 270win
chris and mike, thanks for the replies. I think I made a drug trade the other day for some 4831 for rl-17. I'm getting some good results with RL-17 at low velocity 2670, berger 150, 3/4 inch at 100 but then it starts widening rapidly as I push closer to 2900. Hoping to find a higher end harmonic but may scrap the powder for 4831 in hopes of getting the faster velocity and accuracy. Still hoping to make it a 600 yard gun for elk but the load will determine that for me. Hoping to get my hands on those matrix 165. Have either of you tested these or know load data?

Thanks again

Re: magnum primers in 270win
Generally speaking, in the past, I have had less than optimal results with H4831 / ADI 2213sc in the .270 Winchester. This powder is at its worst when the throat or magazine length of a rifle is very short. Problems can include a general sluggishness during incremental load development and a failure to reach optimum velocities without heavy powder compression.

In such instances, if using this slow burn rate, a magnum primer will help. This burn rate tends to do its best work in long throated, long magazine, long barreled rifles. In other instances, H4350 / ADI 2209 tends to be more responsive regarding the development of both velocity and accuracy. However, I am not talking about reloading manual loads here and am instead speaking of working above book max as per my own book series.

I find 2213sc to be most useful when running heavy (160gr plus) bullets in the .270 and .280 as well as for all bullet weights in the .25-06 and 6.5-06.

Re: magnum primers in 270win
Nathan, thanks for the reply. I have been reading your books with great joy. My rifle is a long throated bastard, 3.51 max COAL with ABLR 150 (M700). Will be switching these out for the matrix 165 when marshal gets more jackets in. I will try your recommended loads from your book with the 4350 and 4831. I have been working with RL-17 which is suppose to be very similar to 4350. I'm loading .03 off the lands. It started off shooting sub moa around 2650-2720 but now is well over. Hoping she shrinks back down with the hotter loads.

I just upgraded all my die sets with a neck sizer after reading your reloading book. Hoping this helps as well. Also upgraded my brass cleaning to a stainless media/water soap tumbler but have yet to use it. Thinking cleaner and fire formed brass with help tighten up my groups.

I have been geeking out with the books and this site. Thanks for filling the gaps in my long range education. Also, talked the wife into a NZ backcountry DIY trip in 2016. Hoping to make a stop to shoot some goats with you for a couple days while we are there.

Thanks again

Jake
