Tyler CampbellHi all,I'm really keen on this caliber at the moment. A mauser m98 would be my ideal action for this rifle. I'm just wondering about all the different m98's that seem to be out there. Are they all essentially the same action? Take these two for example: http://www.trademe.co.nz/sports/hunting-shooting/rifles/centrefire/auction-850844795.htm http://www.trademe.co.nz/sports/hunting-shooting/rifles/centrefire/auction-851547926.htm I understand that there may be feeding issues due to the different case sizes, is this easily overcome? Any help much appreciated, Tyler |

Nathan FosterRe: 6.5-284 ProjectHi Tyler, if you want to keep this simple, try to find a Parker Hale Safari. It should have no side safety (should not have a safety like a Remington). |

Bryan WebsterRe: 6.5-284 ProjectOne enterprising fellow I know had acquired a Savage 11/111 FCNS in some caliber or another, and bought a pre-fitted Shilen barrel, had it chambered in 6.5-284.I was at a shoot where the fellow was competing, doing amazingly well with it out to 600 meters. Some of his 100 and 200 benchrest sighting shots were tiny bughole groups. Great for a heavy shorter rifle, and used the original stock but had it glassed and had installed a different brand of trigger he liked better. His entire forte was not much money at all being he got the original rifle used. |

Bryan WebsterRe: 6.5-284 ProjectHe also figured out how he could spend 20 minutes installing other prefitted barrels and have a totally new cartridge to play around with. |

Tyler CampbellRe: 6.5-284 ProjectGreat advice thanks Nathan.Hey Thomas, pretty keen on the mauser action. I've thought about reaming out a 6.5x55 but based on Nathans research there isn't really enough 'meat' in the chamber to do this, leaving the barrel prone to 'whip'. Thanks Bryan, sounds like a really accurate caliber, would be cool to take an extra barrel with you hunting and change it depending on what you encounter! |

Barry ShoneRe: 6.5-284 ProjectTyler, Hornady "Handbook of Cartridge Reloading" indicates that both the 6.5-.284.and .270 winchester are .473 bolt face. |
