Getting Ready to start dialing in the rifle

Weather is starting to break here in New England USA. Been a looooong cold Winter.

Soon I will start doing my one shot group workup. That being the firing of one shot a day from a cold clean barrel.

And it dawned on me that if all of the 180 grain ammo has reasonably the same POI at 100 meters I may be able to sit 10 meters up in a tree and launch the perfect bullet for the occasion on unsuspecting critters as they pass through.

A good White Tail buck wanders by. In goes the fast frangible load. Oh, a lovely Bear. In goes the Nosler Partition.

Ah Ha! A huge Moose out at 250 meters. In goes the A Max.

I'm really starting to like this single shot business with the 30-06 Encore. One gun, a half dozen rounds and I'm covered right across the board.

Autopsies to follow :-)

Has to be one of the best all round versitle hunting cartridges Thomas, not much the old 06 carnt take on hey!
Partition and Amax will cover pretty much most things, l have mine shooting same POI for a fair few different loads which makes life easier.
It's become a bit of a safe queen of late which will change shortly as my son takes it over as he steps up from his 308W.

So much so Martin that I am weeding out rifles in an attempt to settle on one, or perhaps 2 calibers.

The 30-06 being the front runner. But I can't rule out the 270 either. For as old a round as it is I still can't believe how flat that 270 shoots.

My bolt Weatherby is sighted in at 100 meters to hit 3" high. At 300 meters it is STILL 2" high. If I stake out a clearcut it will be the rifle I have in tow for the occasion.

Nah, I have to have the 270 in the lineup too.

Lovely Corsican Ram taken with it at just a wee bit over 300 meters some years back.

Hi Thomas
Are those trajectory figures for a 270 win? Or Weatherby mag?
Mine sends 140gn pills @ 3000fps 3" H at 100m puts it 4" low at 300m

Re: Getting Ready to start dialing in the rifle
I'm about to build up a 270win for my friends first CF rifle!

It's an all round rifle, so l have picked on this classic calibre for him due to its user friendly recoil and a little flatter shooting with the lighter pills for spot lighting foxes and dogs. I will work up a load using the bigger pills for deer, think Partition's or most likely Woodleigh PP's as l can get them locally.

But l still love the versatility of the 06, can't beat the projectile choices for it and l don't mind holding over a liitle if needed!

The results may be skewed as I was shooting the 270 Win with a 130 grain bullet just about at the top of the mountain which was the only place sparse enough to get that kind of distance.

The thermal currents up there are so strong one can hear them. I'm of the thought that those wind currents moved the POI left and up.

None the less, had it been game, it would have been well hit.
