Craig BucklandHi everyone,Im looking at lapping the lugs on my Remington and have had a hard time finding a suitable lapping compound due to my current location. I been looking online etc but all I can find is compounds over the $100 mark. Yesterday I found this http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=882974790 on trademe and was wondering if the 40 and 10 micron would do the trick as long as I gave the action etc a clean up after. Any thoughts on this or any other cheap solutions I can purchase online? I also looked for Buff grit to no avail. Thanks Craig |

chris murphyRe: Lapping compound for bolt lugsHi Craig the 20 will do it. Or if the lugs are quite bad start with 40 to save time. Another option is scrape the grit off a bit of 180 grit sandpaper with an old knife and mix with oil to make a lapping paste. Or go see local mechanic and ask for a little bit of fine valve grinding paste. |

Nathan FosterRe: Lapping compound for bolt lugsHi Craig, I am not familiar with this brand. You could try the #28, then finish with the #7.You will actually feel it when you lap. If the lap is too course, you can immediately feel a severe bite / friction which poses a risk of marring. As soon as you feel such a bite, move to a finer grit and clean up to prevent any deep marring. They look cheap enough to be able to experiment with a few grades. There is no need for any of the mirror grades. |

Warwick MarflittRe: Lapping compound for bolt lugsJust a thought. Trying toothpaste. I have used it to smooth out the bolt on my CZ 223 when it was new and tight to cycle the action it's smooth and like silk to cycle the bolt now. |

Craig BucklandRe: Lapping compound for bolt lugs#28 and #7 as per Nathan's suggestion. You could go to #40 I think if you had a bit of work to be done.I also bought the #0.5 to try for stropping my knife. It seems to have worked well also. |
