Joshua MayfieldGood Evening All,Yesterday a guy told me he'd been started by a very large boar on his land. I asked him if he wanted it killed and he said yes. So now I am getting ready to work up a hog load. Curious what you fellows who have experience with large boars would recommend from my current stock of projectiles. The rifle is a .30-06. The range, if I find the beast, will likely be less than 150 yards. Here is my on hand bullet selection: 168gr Amax 178gr Amax 150gr Swift Sciroccos 150gr round tip, flat base Hot Cor (very old) 185gr Berger Hybrids Any thoughts? |

Joshua MayfieldRe: bullet for a boarSlipped my mind somehow - I also have a few 208gr Amaxes and some 150gr Interlocks. |

Bob MavinRe: bullet for a boarAny of those will do the job, I'd go with what's accurate, probably the 178 or 168 A-max |

Mike DavisRe: bullet for a boarsmack him in the swede with what ever shoots best for you...or behind shoulder ANGLING FORWARD and you will have big pile of pork. 150 interlocts would be ok . the sirrocos should be too but too pricey for my tastes. |

Nathan FosterRe: bullet for a boarHy Josh, would you like to have a play with the 208gr A-Max just for kicks. It will work well and will be interesting to perform load development with.Just for kicks. |

Joshua MayfieldRe: bullet for a boarYou know, Nathan, "just for kicks" is one of my favorite reasons for trying just about anything. And now that I have a few powders and a chronograph to play with it's probably the perfect time to tinker with the 208s.I do have a follow-up question. I have never shot a hog - if I get into some smaller animals before I find this big boar would you expect the 208s to still perform well? Would I be wise to carry a lighter load as well? |

Mike DavisRe: bullet for a boarif you are shooting them for eating....again the 150 interloct be good choice for smaller pig, you wont need anything to drastic to tip over young one or a sow..its the big boars 120lb and up that have thick sheild..that said Ive shot 1 or 6 with 130grn factory .270 old type silvertips which are soft and never had issue. anywhere in the earhole is good for pork recovery...LOL |

Jim MoseleyRe: bullet for a boarI like the sound of the 208 amax myself. That's a lot of energy pounding the side of a hog's head. Won't be a lot left for "hog head cheese"! |

Bob MavinRe: bullet for a boarHi JoshuaI don't think the 208 A-Max will do much meat damage on small animals, probably less than the others. Cheers Bob |

chris murphyRe: bullet for a boarBob's onto it with the impact velocity of the 208 from the 30-0sexy the most you will lose is 1 shoulder should the shot be at a little distance and if closer the SD is high enough to drive through so if it groups good that would be my pick |
