Nathan FosterRe: What barrel paint finish should I applyHi Jit, I put my thoughts on this in book 3. It is certainly not something you want to rush into. I have seen far too many chop shop jobs in this regard, bedding surfaces ruined, ongoing chipped paint, paint runs into critical tolerance areas. Paint jobs often 'look cool' to the inexperienced but beyond the looks, there can be a host of problems.Either follow the paint methods in book 3 or bead blast it with glass bead (any stainless fab shop) and hand rub grease into the finish, forgetting the paint altogether. Careful planning is the key. Guy brings me a rifle, has all the whistles and bells. It has a suppressor right up to the chamber. It has a Gimmick model 7000 long range scope and bipod to aid in the slapping noise of the forend hitting the suppressor. It certainly looks the part to the novice. I handle the rifle, I see the painted action wedged and strained in the bedding, the barrel that cannot be floated. I sit and put my head in my hands absently. The client asks if I am OK. I simply state "I am so sorry but your rifle is a complete and utter piece of shit". |

chris murphyRe: What barrel paint finish should I applyHi Thomas I'm a fully qualified spray painter and have pretty much painted everything but refuse to paint a rifle (unless bench rest) cos no mater what you do it won't last. your best bet is tape and paint as per Nathan's book. |

Jit RathodRe: What barrel paint finish should I applyGood feedback. It's already painted but chipping off , particularly since I got degreaser on it. I was thinking glass bead blasted to clean if up then Cerakote . The bedding looks like it needs a Nathan style job , as it's a white filler substance, quite hard, but difficult to check what it is. |

chris murphyRe: What barrel paint finish should I applySorry Jit didn't mean to call Thomas bit of a mix up.Another thing to concider if blasting is who you get to do it some rough guys can put to much heat into it and with the pounding of the media as well could up set the temper of the barrel. My personal method would be block muzzle and action with plastesine paint strip it then get someone to woft over with a fine glass media and make sure it is new old media if used on mild steel will be contaminated and my cause little rust spots |

Nathan FosterRe: What barrel paint finish should I applySorry- yes everything should be done exactly as Chris describes. Paint strip, then blast with glass bead, watch for cross contaminated bead- do not use anything that has been used on mild steel.Use a bone from a roast as a scraper in conjunction with paint stripper, shape it into a chisel point. You'll go through a pile of paint stripper- been through this before removing chop shop paint jobs. Chris, I don't get too worried about garnet versus temper on modern actions or barrels (if using garnet for a super dull finish). If anything, I would quite like to try shot peening one day to stress relieve barrels. You will have come across the terms stress relieved and double stressed relieved barrels. I would very much like to see how shot peening fits this picture one day, just for kicks. |

Thomas KitchenRe: What barrel paint finish should I applyi always like this forum you always learn the right way of doing things.just on paint/old blueing removal i have heard people using steel wool what your guys opinion on that is it a no go? |
@ 12:48 am (GMT) |
Nathan FosterRe: What barrel paint finish should I applyThe trouble with steel wool is the mild steel contamination. same as when its used to clean old rifle bores. Not so bad for blue finishes but problemtaic on stainless. |

chris murphyRe: What barrel paint finish should I applyIf you go down your local paint and panel shop they should be able to sell you a little of there real good stripper the stuff I use will take all the paint off a car with one coat. Far better than the over the counter stuff from repco or had wear store |
