Ben WhiteHello everyone,I recently bought a Sako 75 in 7mm Rem Mag and need a bullet suitable for Sambar. I've tried a variety of 160 grain bullets like the 162gr sst and the 160 g partition but can not get them to shoot accurately. I've tried many different seating depths, powder charges etc, but the rifle doesnt like them. It'll shoot anything 140 grain beautifully. So my question i guess is, has anyone had good results on larger deer with lighter bullets like the 140g woodleigh? Also, great site with amazingly indepth info. Thanks. |

Bob MavinRe: Can't use 160 grain bulletsHi BenI love Woodleigh's in 30 cal but haven't used them in 7mm. My Mate shoots a lot of Samba with a 7RM he likes Woodleigh Hydro's. He also likes Winchester 160gn factory rounds? Cheers Bob |

Bob MavinRe: Can't use 160 grain bulletsBen.160gn A-max is very good but if it wont shoot the SST I may not shoot the A-max. For ranges out to around 300m my personal favourite is Woodleigh P/P. Cheers Bob |

Thomas KitchenRe: Can't use 160 grain bulletshi benwhat range are you shooting samber at? you might find that if your shooting at closer rangers you'll need a tougher bullet to make up for the lower s.d you may also have to aim to not hit bone. heard good things about weldcores but haven't used them myself. some options maybe interbonds hot cors swift a frames (150grain) partitions in lighter grain 150 or 140 have you tried 150grains projectiles? what group sizes are you getting with 140 grains? if your shooting at longer rangers you'll have problems with bullet blow up at closer ranges so may need to dual load. there's many way to skin a cat and the guys on here are very knowledgeable, best thing is to describe your hunting situation/style and go from there. |

Nathan FosterRe: Can't use 160 grain bulletsThis discussion is highly problematic and yet again the subject matter ties back into the book series.Quite often, a 7mm Rem Mag rifle will go well with 140gr bullets because: The speeds with book max loads go well with the twist rates. Recoil to the platform is mild (bedding etc). Recoil to the shooter is mild. If we then go to a 160gr bullet and follow book max loads, we can run into the problem of the rifle not working at is optimum upper node. Although the book says we have reached maximum, we may be many grains under rifle maximum and have not achieved that sweet spot we are looking for. But as we increase loads, the bedding falls short under recoil and our technique also falls short. If our loads lack concentricity, we simply add yaw when increasing speeds. In conclusion, we are left are left with the assumption that the rifle only likes 140 grain bullets. Hence the book series, including the final book still to come. I am sorry but there is no easy answer. You can do this,m b ut you have to work through all of the steps, the rifle platform, hand loads and shooting technique. |
