Replacement cartridge for 250/3000 Savage

William Adasiewicz

I have a Savage Model 99 take down that has been in the family for almost 100 years and has a barrel that is in need of replacement or if possible re-borred to the next size up. Does anyone have any ideas what would be a cartridge that is close enough to work in the cylindrical magazine and still have some power behind it?

Thanks in advance for any help.
Bill

hi william.
have you thought about wildcatting it up to 7mm? or going 22/250 with higher twist rate for heavier projectiles not the standard 55gr ones.

im not to familiar with the 250 savage case, have you got enough bag length to go one of the 308 case rounds? as i believe the 99 was offered in this caliber and has rotatory mag.

also if you have enough barrel the .300 savage is based off of the 250/3000

Correct me if I'm wrong but the case length may be an issue for many cartridges in the Savage 99 rifle. I do remember shooting my uncles Savage 99 in a 308. Please let us know what you decide to go with.

Thats correct Shawn. After Savage dropped this case design, they went with .243 and .308 as the two sole offerings. The .308 makes for a good allrounder. The magazine needs to be 72mm / 2.834" to comfortably fit .308 cartridges. That said, it is possible to have the magazine 1mm / 40 thou shorter and seat hand loads to 69.5mm / 2.736 or seat plastic tipped bullets to 70mm / 2.755"- all of which will leave a 1mm / 40 thou gap or more at the front of the magazine for smooth feeding.

Its been about 100 years since I worked with a Savage. So- check the mag length on your rifle. If you want to try the .308, you should also be able to break the rifle down, then see if .308 ammo feeds out of the mag OK.
