Ben GradyHi guys, I have had an injured elbow so have not advanced in the development of my P17 25-06 loads.During the last load development session at the range. My chrony was showing unusually fast speeds of 3200fps for my 117gr Pro hunters. At max or just under- book loads (primers and bolt lift showing no signs of pressure issues). Next visit to the range I am going to try seating the bullets deeper and see what happens (factory rounds were 1.5mm shorter than my loads and showed better accuracy. One thing I did notice was copper fowling in one of the lands only. I am wondering if this is probably caused by a burr from when the barrel was reamed. I think I have finally grown big enough balls to give hand lapping a go and will hand lap the throat to remove any burs and a light touch to the rest of the barrel. I will follow Nathans instructions from the Accurizing and Maintenance book. My question is: do I lube the maroon poly pad with CRC Longlife or do I use the maroon poly pad dry? I guess it should be lubed but if someone could confirm this I would be grateful. |

Bob MavinRe: My P17 25-06 and Hand LappingHi BenI haven't used the poly pad method but I've used JB non embedding bore paste with good results. Bob |

Ben GradyRe: My P17 25-06 and Hand LappingThanks BobI do have autosol to use after the maroon poly pad. Hopefully someone who uses the polypad method will chip in. |

Nathan FosterRe: My P17 25-06 and Hand LappingA lube will soften the cut Ben. Sounds like the rifle is a light fouler so be careful as to how much you give it and yes, you could use a wee bit of Long Life in this instance. In a heavy fouler / craze cracked throat / burred throat, use a dry pad to get increased cutting action. |

Bob MavinRe: My P17 25-06 and Hand LappingHi BenYou might be able to feel where the rough spot is. if you lube a patch up and feel gently. Bob |

Ben GradyRe: My P17 25-06 and Hand LappingHey Bob, I don't think my touch is sensitive enough to feel whats going on.I will go see my gunsmith as he has a bore scope, then hopefully I can see if there is a burr where the reamer touched the rifling. I may be barking up the wrong tree but it seems odd to me that the copper fouling is in one land only. Will let you know what I find. |
