I have alway shot from the prone posision as I learned it from older hunters. It is the same posision I used in high power rifle compition and it is the same posision that Nathan teaches in his books. Why and when did shooters go to a more in line style of prone shooting?

Hi Gerry, nobody is replying because the buggers are so respectful that they are keeping a lid on things so folk have to buy the book. Man I love these guys. Such loyalty.

I will try to answer this but it will be ambiguous as per the above.

It seems to have started with the BR crowd during the 1970's. But people also have to understand that there were benchrest shooters using both approaches as at that time, people still had a good understanding of "horse for courses". There are still a portion of top level BR shooters who get this, utilizing both the newer benchrest technique and more traditional prone technique depending on the situation. Per chance, one U.S champion shooter purchased several shooting books off us a few days ago because after reading the book for himself and finally finding someone in agreement with him, wanted to make sure all of his friends / peers would read the same material.

Beyond these exceptions, it simply seems that shooting skills have faded away. The BR and F-Class form is now the norm and there is no understanding of the problems that can arise as a result.

From memory Gerry, one of your go-to rifles is an M70 .300 Win Mag, a good rig for your Alaskan conditions. As you know, technique is everything with such a rifle. There is simply no room for human error or lax habits. Does this make shooting such a rifle hard? Should the words 'no room for error' raise alarm bells? Not really, not if we have our technique pat. For you, its just another day at the office.

"Stay green and grow" a grade school coach once told me. This web site and the knowledge base plus the books have been an eye opener. Thanks
